Dustin Poirier has been a force in the UFC‘s lightweight division for over a decade. The Louisiana native started as a featherweight in 2011, winning hearts with his grit and determination. Back then, few could have predicted his rise to becoming one of the most respected fighters in UFC history.

His epic battles with Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, and the trilogy with Conor McGregor have become part of UFC folklore. Now, at 36, Poirier finds himself at an interesting crossroads in his career. This came especially after his gutsy performance against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.

Dustin Poirier Gives Update On His Upcoming Fight

In a recent tweet that got fight fans buzzing, Poirier shot down rumors about fighting in Miami (UFC 314) but hinted at something big in the works. He hasn’t fought since his remarkable showing against Makhachev, where despite losing via submission in the fifth round, he earned high praise from the champion himself.

Dustin Poirier (30-9-0 1 NC) had announced before UFC 302 that whether he won or lost, he would retire. But, the competitive spirit in him still rages on. He is ready and willing to put his body on the line, one last time, and to feel the energy of the octagon.

As for his opponent, that is still a mystery. There were rumors that Dan Hooker might be his next opponent, but that has been thrown in the bin as he is set to take on Justin Gaethje. A speculation is that he might face Arman Tsarukyan next, after the latter pulled out of his scheduled bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 311. But nothing is concrete as of yet!

Dustin Poirier’s Legacy

Dustin Poirier has fought for the title three times in his career, and that too against absolute monsters. Despite not ever winning the title, he has managed to be an evergreen contender in the lightweight division.

The bout against Islam Makhachev proved that even at this stage of his career, ‘The Diamond’ hasn’t lost his shine. He is still ready to take on all up and comers, (the fight with Benoit Saint-Denis was epic!) and show his skill and experience. The timing of Poirier’s announcement is particularly interesting, considering he has hinted that he’s in the twilight of his career.

The guy who started selling hot sauce between fights has come a long way. Now he is a household name with the “Paid in Full” tattoo (on his left forearm) to match his success.

Even after his loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 and loss to Makhachev at UFC 302, Poirier proved the doubters wrong with his never give up attitude. The Lightweight Kingpin Islam Makhachev too was surprised at the level he bought to their fight!
