The New York Liberty continued their dominance and defeated the Washington Mystics 86-78. This not only marked their eighth straight win in the 2025 WNBA season, but the Liberty recorded their best start of a season in the history of the franchise. On the other hand, the Golden State Valkyries suffered their fourth straight loss as the Phoenix Mercury took them down 86-77.
Following their respective wins, the Liberty are 2-0 while the Mercury are 1-1 in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup 2025.

The New York Liberty registered their eighth straight win, recording the best start in the history of the franchise, as they defeated the Washington Mystics 86-78. During the game, the Liberty lost Jonquel Jones early in the first quarter with an ankle injury. However, Brianna Stewart put up a double-double and grabbed the eighth spot in the franchise’s all-time scoring leaderboard. She finished the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and one assist.
Apart from her, Sabrina Ionescu became the franchise’s all-time leader for the most three-pointers made. Ionescu tallied 13 points, three rebounds, and seven assists, while shooting 3-of-17 from the field and 2-of-10 from the three-point range. She now has 401 three-pointers. Not only this, but she also became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach the 400-3PM mark, in 151 games.

On the other hand, the Mystics suffered their sixth loss of the season. They had Kiki Iriafen leading the charts with 17 points, nine rebounds, and one assist. Jade Melbourne poured in 15 points, two rebounds, and four assists while Sonia Citron dropped 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
The Phoenix Mercury defeated the Golden State Valkyries 86-77 at home, Footprint Center in Phoenix, and recorded their sixth win of the season. Mercury’s undrafted rookie Lexi Held led the team with 24 points and two assists, as she dropped her career-high score. The victory pushed the Mercury to a 2-1 Commissioner’s Cup record. Satou Sabally came up with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Mercury.

On the other hand, the Valkyries, who got off to a decent start in the 2025 season, suffered their fourth straight defeat. Veronica Burton poured in 16 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Temi Fagbenle tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist. A total of three players including Kayla Thornton, Cecilia Zandalasini, and Julie Vanloo scored 10 points apiece.
