In a recent change before the 2025 NBA All-Star game, the All-Star game MVP trophy was renamed to Kobe Bryant trophy for his historic and memorable performances in the All-Star games.
Bob Pettit has won four All-Star game MVPs. He won the award in 1956, 1958, 1959 (tie) and 1962. He made his All-Star debut in 1955 and made 11 All-Star appearances in his career, winning four MVPs in 11 years was an impressive feat to achieve.
The St. Louis Hawks (now known as, Atlanta Hawks) forward won his first MVP in 1956, after scoring a 20-20 double-double and finishing the game with 20 points, 24 rebounds and seven assists.
Pettit’s second All-Star game MVP came in 1958, as he recorded his second 20-20 performance at the 1958 All-Star game. He finished the game with 28 points, 26 rebounds and one assist. His third MVP came in 1959, and he became the first player to win the All-Star game MVP in consecutive years. As of February 2025, Bob Pettit and Russell Westbrook are the only players to win consecutive All-Star game MVP awards. He shared the 1959 MVP award with Elgin Baylor as both of them scored a double-double.
Pettit’s final All-Star game MVP came in 1962. He recorded a third 20-20 double-double and finished the game with 25 points, 27 rebounds and two assists. As of the 2025 NBA All-Star game, only Bob Pettit and Wilt Chamberlain have registered a 20-20 game at the All-Star weekend.
Kobe Bryant has also won four All-Star game MVPs. He won the award in 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011. The Los Angeles Lakers guard repeated Bob Pettit’s footsteps as both won a co-MVP in their All-Star careers. He made 18-All-Star appearances in his career which ranks him third and only behind, LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kobe Bryant’s first All-Star game MVP came in 2002, as he finished the game with 31 points, five rebounds and five assists. He also became the eighth All-Star game MVP in history to drop 30 or more points in an All-Star game.
The Lakers legend won his second All-Star game MVP in 2007. He finished the game with nearly the identical stat line as the 2002 All-Star game, recording 31 points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals.
His third All-Star game MVP was a co-MVP and was shared Shaquille O’Neal in 2009. Kobe finished the game with 27 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals to seal his third All-star game MVP award.
Kobe’s final All-star game MVP came in 2011. He recorded his career high of 37 points and also his first and only double-double of his All-Star career. He finished the game with 37 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals to win his fourth All-Star MVP award.
