It was a dream run for Mboko, who came from one-set behind to beat the 4-time Grand Slam champion en route to title glory. The local sensation also won her first career WTA title.

Victoria Mboko Beats 4 Grand Slam Champions en route to Her First-Ever Title

Victoria Mboko’s journey to her first singles’ title wasn’t easy. The Canadian teenager beat four Grand Slam champions to claim the Maters 1000 title in Montreal. The 18-year-old becomes the second-youngest woman in the Open Era to defeat four Grand Slam champions in a single tournament. Serena Williams was 17 years old when she won the US Open in 1999.

Naomi Osaka won the opening set 6-2 and the pressure was on Mboko but the Canadian ace replied with winning the second set 6-4. The decider set was one-way traffic as the 4-time major champions won just one game and Mboko dispatched her 6-1. The 18-year-old will jump from 85th to 25th in the world after this win.

Mboko joined Faye Urban in 1969 and Bianca Andreescu in 2019 as the only Canadians to win the home event in the open era. During this run, she beat Coco Gauff in the fourth round and then, overcame Elana Rybakina in semifinals by saving a match point.

The impact of Mboko’s title in Montreal was so unreal that men’s singles final between Shelton and Khachanov in Toronto was stopped for a while as the crowd erupts mid-match. Both stars were confused and Ben Shelton asked the umpire about the whole drama. He got to know that a Canadian player won the title in Montreal.

Mboko dropped to her knees after winning the trophy and crowd got crazy. The umpire requested them to stay quite. The Canadian ace converted eight of nine break points and she has 82% win on 1st serve compared to Osaka’s 77%.

Mboko is also the third wild card to win a WTA 1000 title, following Maria Sharapova at Cincinnati in 2011 and Andreescu at Indian Wells in 2019. “I wanna thank Naomi for an incredible match,” said Mboko after winning the title. “I’ve always looked up to her when I was really little. It’s great to play with such an amazing player like you.
