Zhang Weili Wants A Super Fight With Women’s Pound For Pound Number 1 Fighter!

Zaid Quraishi

Zhang Weili calls for a blockbuster showdown with the women's pound-for-pound #1 fighter in a highly anticipated super fight!

The UFC women’s divisions have come a long way since Ronda Rousey first kicked down the door in 2013. From Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s striking masterclasses to Amanda Nunes’ two-division dominance, female fighters have consistently delivered some of the most memorable moments in the octagon. Now, Zhang Weili stands as the latest torchbearer for women’s MMA.

Fresh off her dominant victory over the previously undefeated Tatiana Suarez at UFC 312, Weili has proven once again why she is the most feared strawweight on the planet. The win marks her third straight title defense in her second championship reign, making her the most successful Chinese champion in UFC history. To put that in perspective, she has now beaten everyone in her division except that one pesky thorn in her side, Rose Namajunas – who’s now fighting at flyweight anyway.

Zhang Weili Calls For A Super Fight Vs. Valentina Shevchenko!

After dismantling Suarez with a mix of striking and grappling, Zhang Weili has set her sights on an even bigger challenge. The strawweight queen wants to test herself against recently crowned flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. The fighter from Kyrgyzstan just reclaimed her throne from Alexa Grasso at UFC 306.

“Let’s talk with Dana later, but I think everything is about timing. So if there is a good time for both of us to make this fight happen, it happens.”

This isn’t just any potential matchup. It is a clash between two of the most technically gifted fighters in women’s MMA history. And if this materialises, fans are in for a treat! Weili’s approach to calling for this fight shows her wisdom. Instead of the usual chest-thumping callout, she is playing it cool, saying it’s all about timing and that she sees all opponents as teachers.

What’s Next For The ‘Magnum’ Zhang Weili?

While UFC CEO Dana White seems intrigued by the potential super fight, there is still the matter of Virna Jandiroba waiting in the wings, provided she gets past Yan Xiaonan at UFC 314. But let’s be honest, after watching Zhang Weili handle Suarez, it’s hard not to get excited about the prospect of her moving up to challenge Valentina Shevchenko.

The last time two champions this technically skilled met in the octagon, fans got treated to Amanda Nunes vs. Shevchenko. And while that fight might not have lived up to expectations, Zhang vs. Shevchenko would be an entirely different story!
