Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Spurs knew they needed a solid performance away from home. The decisive moment came just before half-time when Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos collided with James Maddison inside the box and Solanke calmly converted from the spot.

The second half saw Frankfurt dominate possession and push relentlessly for an equaliser, but Tottenham defended resolutely and posed a threat on the counter-attack. Spurs keeper Vicario came up big with a brilliant close-range save to deny Fares Chaibi while Rasmus Kristensen missed a golden chance to level the tie for the hosts. Despite being pinned back, Spurs held on to secure a vital away win.

On Wednesday, Ange Postecoglou admitted he had “no idea” whether he would still be in charge after Tottenham’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt. But after guiding his side to the hard-fought victory, he can now turn his attention to a two-legged semi-final against Bodo/Glimt in May.

“I’m the same coach that I was yesterday. The players have never lost belief. People like to mock and diminish my achievements but I’ll leave that there.

“I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t affect what I do. For me, it’s always about the dressing room. Do the players believe? Do the staff believe?

“That’s much more important than what others may make of me.

“So, unfortunately for a lot of you, you’re going to have to put up with me for a little bit longer.”

Ange Postecoglou insisted he never lost belief in his squad and feels that his players have continued to show trust in his leadership throughout the season. Notably, Europa League offers a golden opportunity for Spurs to end a 17-year trophy drought.

“They’ve been so united in believing in what we’re trying to achieve here,” Postecoglou said. “And that is what gave me heart all along that if we got our own slice of luck in terms of getting some players back [from injury], that I really believed this team could achieve. That is what keeps driving me.

“Not at any stage have I felt they lost any belief in me or what we’re doing. That is crucial when you’re having a difficult season, but there is also a season of opportunity there.”

Tottenham currently sit 15th in Premier League and they will now put their focus on the Europa League as their best route of securing a spot for European football next season.
