Xavier Worthy Wins The Postseason Triple Crown

Coming into the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs were looking to become the first three-peat in the Super Bowl era. After their 2023 season where they had plenty of problems in their wide receiver room, the Chiefs’ mission was to find multiple solutions to fix it.

Kansas City added Marquise Brown as a free agent to spread the field with the intention that Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice would operate in the middle. In the draft, however, the Chiefs got lucky and were able to draft Xavier Worthy as their first-round pick. Worthy, a talented wide receiver became instantly famous overnight after his combine as he set the fastest time in a 40-yard dash in the history of the Combine. Adding Worthy to the mix allowed Kansas City to spread the offense even more and they relied on his speed to bring back the deep ball threat.

Xavier Worthy’s Rookie Season

Kansas City’s first-round draft selection, Worthy’s season got off to a slow start. There are multiple factors for this and part of the reason was as a rookie he was still in the development mode. He was part of a highly complex Andy Reid offense which takes time and practice to understand fully.

However, the biggest factor was that the Chiefs’ signing Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown suffered an injury that sidelined him till the very end of the regular season. Thus, this forced Worthy to take up Brown’s role on offense while he was getting acquainted with his primary role during training camp. Worthy’s development was further hampered when Rashee Rice was injured early on in the season which meant the Chiefs’ offense had to make several changes to their plans.

However, the rookie started to show signs of development towards the end of the season becoming the leading pass catcher for Patrick Mahomes in multiple games. By the end of the regular season, Worthy was second on the team in receptions and receiving yards to only Travis Kelce, and led all receivers with 6 receiving touchdowns.

Xavier Worthy’s Postseason Performance

By the time the postseason began, Worthy continued to display his progress, and with Hollywood Brown back in the lineup, Worthy could play his natural position on offense. Although the Chiefs did not play in the Wild Card Round due to their bye, Kansas City’s speedster still ended the postseason by winning the triple crown.

The triple crown in the NFL for receivers is a stat line that gives us an idea of how receivers have fared in terms of receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. If any wide receiver leads all three of these categories, he is known to have earned the triple crown.

In three games, Worthy led all teams with 19 receptions, 287 receiving yards, and tied with the Commanders’ Terry McLaurin with 3 receiving touchdowns to earn the postseason triple crown.
