Season Recap 2024

Williams was consistently battling with the other backmarkers to find out which is going to be the worst team in 2024 (unfortunately they even lost that bet). There was no performance and no strategy involved during the 2024 season for the team. The only relief Williams had was Alex Albon fighting tooth and nail to bring the car in points finishes in every race.

Logan Sargeant’s frequent retirements and uncompetitive results were a lost cause for the team. Their replacement driver, Franco Colapinto managed to bring home some points before crashing out. To make things worse, Williams was spending their budget on replacing cars and fixing crashes rather than introducing upgrades. The worst part of their 2024 season came when Sargeant was asked to give up his car in order to enable Alex Albon to compete in the race, in hopes of bringing some points. Williams has proved themselves as not even a hint of the World Championship winning team they were.

History

William was not an underperforming and budget less slow team always. In the early days of Williams Racing, it was able to perform spectacularly. Williams Racing Formula 1 grid in 1977 and by 1980 they were already champions. This victory started the era of what would become Williams’s glorifying history. They went on to win nine championships throughout the 1990s. Williams has hosted some of the legendary drivers of Formula 1- Alan Jones, Nigell Mansel, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Damon Hill just to name a few.

They were very competitive in the early 2000s too. However, 2017 marked the start of Williams’ downfall in Formula 1. They were using engines from Mercedes but were nowhere as competitive as the Silver Arrows. The 2017 Formula 1 season was the last season Williams finished in a respectable fifth in constructor’s standings.

Predictions for 2025

Williams arguably has one of the best driver lineups after Ferrari and McLaren for the upcoming Formula 1 season. They have Alex Albon who has made sure that he competes every race for a points finish. They have Carlos Sainz, who has been impressing everyone on the grid during his spell at McLaren and later with Ferrari. Both of the drivers have multiple podiums to their name and know how to play the team game. But, having good drivers is not going to bag them points if they do not have a good car.

Williams securing Carlos Sainz Jr. ahead of 2025 was a huge decision, but can Williams make him the first driver? They have been heavily dependent on Alex Albon for the past few seasons and it would be equally unfair for either of the drivers to get special priority. Williams will have to save itself from the situation Alpine faced if they want to balance out the 2025 season and at least try to not be the worst team on the grid.

Carlos Sainz Jr.

NameCarlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro
BirthplaceMadrid, Spain
Birthdate1 September 1994

Carlos Sainz Jr. is known as the “Smooth Operator” of the Formula 1 grid and aptly so. He originated from the Red Bull Junior team initially joining Scuderia Toro Rosso alongside Max Verstappen. He was able to escape the Red Bull junior driver treatment and joined McLaren to give a kickstart to his career. Sainz performed incredibly well at McLaren and his performance earned him a seat in a Scuderia Ferrari in 2021. Sainz was able to go toe to toe with Leclerc on numerous occasions, even though he knew that Leclerc was Ferrari’s first choice.

He left Ferrari after a successful spell joining Williams for the 2025 season. Sainz Jr. was initially hinted to join Sauber considering his father’s connections with Audi. However, the Spaniard shocked the entire grid by becoming a Williams driver. Sainz has made it clear that he wants to bring Williams back to their former glory and not let them become a backmarker team anymore.

Alex Albon

NameAlexander Albon Ansusinha
BirthplaceWestminster, London, England
Birthdate23 March 1996

Alexander Albon is among the most consistent drivers of the 2025 grid. He has proven himself many times even though he has been driving a backmarker car for the past few years. Albon was able to scourge for points in the slow Williams as soon as he joined the team for the 2021 season. Albon has managed to overturn the championship for Williams, giving them crucial points to stay dead last in the championship.

Albon initially debuted as a Red Bull junior driver with Toro Rosso. He was called upon to replace Pierre Gasly in 2019. However, Red Bull couldn’t care less about his career before choosing Sergio Perez to replace him. Albon had his redemption with Williams where he proved that he was more than a failed Red Bull experiment. Over the years, Williams have depended on Albon constantly for competing in the championship.
