The “DRS” term is known to every Formula 1 fanatic. At any moment throughout the day, you can hear fans arguing about how their team’s DRS is working better. The term has even more complications with the introduction of “triple-DRS” and “mini-DRS”. This tool is one of the only “overtaking aids” that a driver can utilise during racing. The DRS is now a crucial part of Formula 1. It helps in staging many exciting overtaking battles among the drivers. The DRS system is common terminology and part of race strategy. However, for newer Formula 1 fans it can be overwhelming.
The DRS has been in the spotlight for the past few days in Formula 1. Formula 1 teams are being rebuked for the use of “mini-DRS”. FIA has curbed this effect with the help of Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton was also bombarded the media over his argument with race engineer, Adami regarding the use of “K1”.
Let’s dive-in to understand the Formula 1 terminology- DRS
The term DRS is simply an acronym for the Drag Reduction System technology employed by Formula 1 teams (I know what you thought cricket fans). In F1, this system comes into play during an overtake. It is simply the arrangement of the rear wing flap. In normal arrangement, the rear wing has a serrated parabolic structure that deflects air. When it is engaged, the upper flap of the wing opens to leave a gap between the upper and lower portion of the wing.
This DRS system is only limited to certain sections of the track deemed legal for usage. The DRS system also stays closed during the race. There are only two conditions for the utilisation of this aid-
Qualifying- During qualifying runs when the driver is trying to set a fastest lap, he can utilise the DRS aid.
Race- If a driver is attacking another driver in front. The attacking driver has to stay within 1s of the car in front in order to employ the DRS system.
In order to understand the Drag Reduction system we need to understand the aerodynamics of a Formula 1 car (cracks knuckles). A F1 car at its maximum speed generates a high amount of drag. This drag arises from the wind a F1 car is pushing away from front as it tears through the tarmac. As it name suggest, it drags the car and the power produced by the engine has to compensate for it. At the maximum speed, all power produced by engine is being combated by the drag and there can be no more increase in speed.

Here’s where the DRS system comes in play- after engaging the aid system, the rear flap opens. The new configuration of rear wing is much more aerodynamically efficient. The air can now pass better from the rear wing, decreasing the drag. Now, a quick science lesson-
“What does the engine do with the extra power left due to less drag?”
The answer lies in the previous explanation. The engine uses this extra power on the car to increase its speed further. In summary, the DRS system increases the speed of the Formula 1 car. How does it help during the two instances it is used-
Qualifying- here it helps the driver set faster lap times with every weapon at his disposal.
Race- this time it helps the overtaking driver in gaining speed advatange and combating the dirty air being generated from the car in front.

No. The answer is, K1 is just another name for the DRS technology. In order to understand this, we should know that the DRS system is activated using a button on the steering wheel. Now, every team utilises a specific steering wheel unique to their cars. This means every button on the steering wheel and every layout it unique. K1 is the name designated to the overtaking aid button at Scuderia Ferrari. In short, K1 engages the DRS system in Ferrari cars. If you heard closely, you would know that the engineer kept asking him to use K1 when he had a car in front within 1s.
