Williams Boys Annoy the Grid on Their Way to Double Points Finish in Monaco!

Here's why the drivers were annoyed to race behind the Williams on Sunday in Monte Carlo!

The Monaco GP was not more interesting that the previous years. Even the new two-stop rule could not change the course of the race. As always, teams got away and secured their positions from the starting grid to control the race all the way up to its end. There were virtually no overtakes during the race.

Even though, the Monaco Grand Prix brought in some valuable points for most of the teams on the grid. The race did not look fair to the backmarkers or the teams which missed out on points this time. Williams were among the lucky teams this weekend. They were able to win double points from the race following Fernando Alonso’s DNF. However, the means they used during the race was a point of concern.

Williams held up the entire grid yesterday for both of they drivers. It caused a lot of frustration among the cars behind. Merecedes were among the prime victims for the same.

Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon Slow Down the Entire Pack in Their Williams

The game of slow train started with Racing Bulls. They got away with their mandatory two-stops early on during the race. The Bulls used Liam Lawson to effectively get Hadjar fresh tyres and attack in front. Later on, Lawson could get his own two stops holding back the grid.

Williams took inspiration from the Bulls. Vowles was interviewed during the broadcast about his racing strategy. He was criticising the idea of holding up the grid for team play at first. However, Vowles realised that in Monaco you need to play the game your opponents are. Team instructions were soon given to Carlos Sainz to slow down enough and get Alex Albon a gap for his pitstops. This was done for Sainz as well. But, by the time his two pitstops were done, the grid was furious behind Albon.

For a long time, this has been the tradition of Monaco GP. A driver starts slowing down to get his teammate enough gap for a pitstop or just to cool down his tyres. This leads to a big traffic which has no way overtaking due to the narrow streets. The effect of this traffic could be seen during the race. The front cars were unable to lap the backmarkers due to intense traffic and slow train created by the Williams.

There is no rule that prevents such driving. But, Williams sure earned a lot of frowns from the grid for their actions. Their slow driving even prompted both Mercedes to cut the chicane in order to get a better result.
