After what feels like a very long transfer saga surrounding Luis Diaz, it seems the Colombian is ready to leave Liverpool to join the German giants Bayern Munich. After three and a half seasons at Anfield, the 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Bundesliga giants.

The new contract between the two has been valued at £65.5 million, including add-ons. The deal sees Liverpool part ways with one of their most electric yet inconsistent forwards. However, the coach and management after trying hard to keep him, saw both footballing and financial logic behind the decision.

Contract Breakdown and Transfer Context

Liverpool had initially resisted Díaz’s push to leave last summer. The club attempted to extend his contract which was set to run until 2027. However, talks stalled over salary expectations. Diaz wanted terms befitting his status, but the club hesitated to offer a significant pay rise.

Bayern Munich returned this summer with a stronger offer. This time with the player insistent on leaving, Liverpool granted permission for him to exit their pre-season tour and complete the move. Diaz’s move has been a strategic move for all involved. From a business standpoint, Liverpool saw a healthy profit of €26 million.

The Reds initially paid Porto €45 million in January 2022. Only €4 million of the €15 million in potential add-ons were ever activated. Liverpool now boost their transfer kitty further. They have raised over €220 million in sales since June 2024. This could help them fund a record-breaking bid for Alexander Isak.

The Legacy and Lingering Questions

On the pitch, Diaz’s Liverpool career offered flashes of brilliance but was marred by inconsistency and unfortunate circumstances. Injuries and personal tragedy – most notably the kidnapping of his parents – hampered his time with the Resa. In 2022-23, a five-month knee injury sidelined him.

Meanwhile 2023-24 saw him split between wide and central roles under new manager Arne Slot, who tried to reinvent him as a striker. He scored 17 goals last season and played a key role in Liverpool’s 20th league title. Even so, Diaz never fully cemented himself among the Anfield elite.

His emotional farewell on Instagram, which included a tribute to the late Diogo Jota, reflected his Liverpool journey: “Three years and a half that I’ll treasure forever… I will never forget him. We will never forget him.” Bayern Munich now view Díaz as the heir to Leroy Sane, slotting back into a more natural wide position.
