Why Did Elena Rybakina Reject Trophy-Ceremony Photos With CEO Portia Archer at the WTA Finals 2025? Riyadh Erupts in Controversy

Rybakina’s icy snub sparks fresh scrutiny of her strained ties with WTA leadership.

Elena Rybakina’s WTA Finals triumph in Riyadh became the season’s most controversial flashpoint as the champion stepped onto the podium. Moments after defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 7-6(0) to claim her biggest title since Wimbledon 2022, Rybakina refused to participate in the customary trophy ceremony photo with WTA CEO Portia Archer.

A move so obvious, deliberate, and public that it instantly overshadowed the trophy itself. The 26-year-old stood away from the center of the court, gestured for the photos to continue without her, and later declined to explain, saying she preferred “to keep the reason between her and the WTA chief.”

Why Did Elena Rybakina Snub WTA CEO Portia Archer?

The snub was the boiling-over of a long, tense dispute between Rybakina, her team, and the WTA’s top officials, a conflict centered on Stefano Vukov, her longtime coach. Many fans and analysts quickly connected her cold withdrawal from the photo to the WTA’s handling of Vukov’s suspension.

Vukov’s coaching style first made headlines during the 2023 Australian Open when he was criticized for the way he spoke to Rybakina. She defended him publicly. But in 2024, after Rybakina briefly split with him, the WTA placed Vukov under temporary suspension pending an investigation into “behavioral concerns.” Then came the hammer, a 12-month ban issued in February 2025. Archer was sharply critical of the findings, stating that, “It’s clear to me you have a toxic relationship,” and calling Vukov’s actions a violation of the “safe environment” the WTA aims to uphold.

Vukov appealed, and in August, he won. By the US Open, he was back in Rybakina’s box. The immediate results were unmistakable with titles in Ningbo and now the WTA Finals in the span of 20 days. But the relationship between Rybakina’s camp and the WTA leadership clearly did not recover.

WTA Finals 2025 Ceremony Turns Into a Statement

The tension became impossible to ignore in Riyadh. Rybakina posed easily with Sabalenka during the initial photo call, but the moment Archer stepped toward the pair, the champion quietly but firmly walked away. Staff motioned for her to return. She didn’t.

In the press room, Rybakina confirmed the act was intentional. She declined to elaborate but made her position clear when asked if efforts were made to resolve tensions. She said, “I think we’re all doing our job and we had the opportunity to have conversations but in the end it never happened… I think we’re going to keep it this way,” as per Reem Abulleil.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
