Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge on Wednesday produced a new hero who created a historic moment. Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl, handed his first European start by head coach Vincent Kompany. The youngster scored just five minutes into the match.

With that, he became Bayern’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the competition. His left-footed strike from the edge of the box wasn’t just a goal. It was rather the birth of a new name in German football. Karl’s goal arrived in breathtaking fashion.

He collected a pass from Jonathan Tah. With the ball at feet, the youngster glided past Brugge defender Brandon Mechele before unleashing a swerving effort that looped over goalkeeper Nordin Jackers and rippled the top corner and the Allianz Arena erupted.

Karl dropped to his knees in disbelief while teammates Harry Kane and Aleksandar Pavlovic rushed to celebrate with him. At 17 years and 242 days, Karl shattered Jamal Musiala’s club record of being the youngest Bayern Munich goalscorer in the Champions League.

Musiala’s record had stood since 2021. UEFA later confirmed that Karl also became the youngest German goalscorer in a Champions League match. Even more fittingly, he wore the same shirt number, 42, which Musiala donned when setting the previous record against Lazio.

Vincent Kompany’s Faith Rewarded

The teenager’s inclusion was a surprise move from Kompany. The coach’s belief in youth development has quickly become a defining feature of his early Bayern reign. The Belgian manager had previously praised Karl for his “exceptional understanding of the game and courage on the ball.”

And it seems his trust was emphatically repaid. For Lennart Karl, the strike marked his first senior goal in ten appearances across all competitions.
