The No. 1 seeds South Carolina Gamecocks will be up against the No. 2 seeds Connecticut Huskies in one of the most anticipated and thrilling fixtures of the season.
The action in the NCAA Women’s Basketball has come down to the championship round, and we will have two of the most dominating teams over the past decade to decide the title. The No. 1 seeds South Carolina Gamecocks will be up against the No. 2 seeds Connecticut Huskies in one of the most anticipated and thrilling fixtures of the season.
Te-Hina Paopao’s 14 points and freshman Joyce Edwards’ 13 off the bench guided the Gamecocks to a 74-57 win over the Texas Longhorns to book a final date. This is the third time they have qualified for the final in four years.
On the other hand, the Huskies got better of UCLA Bruins 85-51 in Final Four to advance to the finale. Sarah Strong finished with 22 points and Azzi Fudd scored all of her 19 points in the first half for the second-seeded Huskies to lead the side to the championship game. The Huskies are now just one win away from their 12th national championship.
The No. 1 seeds South Carolina has won the trophy thrice, in 2017, 2022 and 2024, while remaining undefeated in the season. The Huskies, on the other hand will aim to end their eight-year long drought, the longest since the first time they were crowned champions in 1995. The Huskies have booked 13 championship game appearances. Not only this, but they have made it to 24 Final Fours, every year since 2008. The last time they failed to qualify was in 2023, when their superstar Paige Bueckers missed the season with a torn ACL.
As both sides will clash in the championship game, it will be a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Championship game. The fixture saw South Carolina taking down their counterparts 64-49 to lift their second trophy. They will now aim to become the first repeat champions since UConn won four straight titles from 2013 to 2016. If they are able to roll past the Huskies, they would become only fourth program in NCAA history to win back-to-back national titles, joining the likes of USC, Tennessee and UConn.
