What Nottinham Forest Need To Do To Secure Champions League Next Season?

With just a handful of games remaining in the Premier League campaign, Nottingham Forest find themselves embroiled in the hunt for a coveted Champions League spot. Sitting sixth in the table on 57 points with a game in hand, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are level with Chelsea and Aston Villa, and just one point off Manchester City in fourth place.

Forest have already exceeded expectations this season. After putting together a six-match unbeaten run across competitions and clinching three straight league wins, they were in a strong position. However, back-to-back defeats against Aston Villa and Everton have allowed rival teams to overtake them in the points table.

Yet, there is still cause of optimism for the Tricky Trees. Forest’s remaining fixture list is favorable, on paper at least. Of their final six matches, just one is against a team currently in the top half of the table: Chelsea on the final day of the season.

What Nottinham Forest Need To Do To Secure the Champions League Next Season?

Liverpool have already secured their place in next season’s Champions League, while Arsenal are virtually assured of joining them, holding a comfortable nine-point lead over fifth-placed Chelsea. As a result, Nottingham’s main competitors for the Champions league spots are Man City, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

To guarantee a Champions League spot (Top 5), Nottingham Forest need at least 5 wins and 1 draw from their last 6 games. This will take them to 73 points, a total that cannot be caught by Chelsea or Villa even if those teams win all of their remaining matches.

With five of their last six games against bottom-half opposition, Forest have a golden opportunity to collect maximum points. With just 38 goals conceded this season, Forest’s defensive record has been commendable. To see out the season strong, they’ll need to maintain their discipline at the back.
