England captain Harry Kane has been ruled out of Thursday’s friendly against Wales. His absence at this friendly has raised several questions as to why the captain will be on the bench. The 32-year-old striker has been in sensational form for both club and country. However, he will not feature at Wembley.
The Three Lions’ record goalscorer picked up a minor ankle issue during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in Bundesliga last weekend. Meanwhile, England’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia is approaching. That is probably why Thomas Tuchel has opted for caution regarding his talisman’s fitness.
Kane sustained a knock to his ankle late in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash against Eintracht Frankfurt. He was quickly substituted after receiving treatment. Although he initially insisted that he ‘should be fine’ for England duty. However, his discomfort persisted, prompting medical staff to recommend rest.
Sky Sports reported that the striker has been following an indoor recovery routine instead of training with the main England squad. Thomas Tuchel confirmed the decision to rest his captain, saying: “Harry will miss the game, he got a kick in his last match and it is too painful to kick the ball and too risky for him.”

Tuchel added, “We give him the chance for it to calm down and are convinced he will be ready for Latvia.” The Bayern Munich forward has been in outstanding form this season. He has scored 18 goals in ten matches for the German champions. He has also netted five in six appearances for England. Tuchel praised his captain’s consistency.
Tuchel told Sport Bild: “He is undoubtedly the best striker of his generation. He’s in full flow; you can feel the confidence he carries Bayern Munich and the Three Lions with ease on his shoulders.” While Kane’s absence is a blow, England’s management view it as a precautionary measure. They are prioritizing his availability for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Latvia next week.

With Kane unavailable, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is expected to lead the line. Watkins scored the winner for England in the Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands. He has often stepped in for Kane and boasts five goals in 19 England caps, though his club form this season has been modest.
Marcus Rashford is another potential replacement. Currently a loanee at Barcelona, offers versatility across the frontline and has shown glimpses of form in recent matches. Youngster Shea Lacey was also drafted into senior training to bolster attacking numbers. Meanwhile, Tuchel confirmed that one of Jordan Henderson, John Stones, or Declan Rice will captain the side in Kane’s absence.
