Week 8 Monday Night Football Result – Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice Ball Out As Chiefs Dominate Commanders with a 28–7 Win!

The Kansas City Chiefs met the Washington Commanders in week 8 of Monday Night Football. The Chiefs came into the game with a 4-3 record, having won their last two games over the Lions and the Raiders, while the Commanders, at 3-4, entered the game on a 2-game losing streak.

Turnovers the Name of the Game

The MNF game between the Chiefs and the Commanders got off to a blistering start as both offenses moved the ball well on their respective opening drives. Marcus Mariota led the Commanders inside the Chiefs’ 20-yard line, where Washington ended up turning over the ball. Mariota’s pass popped out of wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s hands and fell to the Chiefs’ defensive tackle Mike Dana.

Going the other way, the Chiefs’ offense also started with a sprint in its step, led by a 27-yard pass play from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy. However, Kansas City’s opening drive also stalled as Mahomes’ intended pass to Hollywood Brown was picked off by cornerback Marshawn Lattimore, resulting in both opening drives ending with interceptions.

The first quarter trickled to an end with no score on the board as the Commanders’ second drive met its end after they failed to convert a 4th and 6 near the Kansas City 40-yard line, despite Washington continuing to move the ball well.

Both Defenses Finally Allow Points Well into the Second Quarter

Kansas City’s second drive of the game ended in a similar fashion to its opening drive. Travis Kelce was unable to hold on to a pass, and it fell into the hands of Commanders’ linebacker Bobby Wagner as Patrick Mahomes threw back-to-back interceptions in his first two drives of the game for the first time in his career.

After squandering yet another fourth-down opportunity, the Commanders turned the ball over on downs yet again. The Chiefs took over, and Mahomes found Kelce on a couple of occasions, including a 30-yard reception, getting the Chiefs inside the red zone.

Back-to-back run plays got the Chiefs the first touchdown of the game as Kareem Hunt powered through to the endzone from near the goal line, putting the Chiefs up 7-0.

On the ensuing drive, the Commanders marched down the field led by a 22-yard reception by Ben Sinnott, who was left wide open as the Chiefs’ coverage broke down. That was followed by an 18-yard pass to Jeremy McNichols, getting Washington near the red zone. A couple more 11-yard plays and the Commanders entered the half with the game tied 7-7 following a touchdown grab by Terry McClaurin.

Chiefs’ Offense and Defense Step Up in Second Half

Coming out of halftime with the game tied at 7-7, the Chiefs looked to take control of the game. Starting out with the ball first, Mahomes and Kelce connect for another big play worth 38 yards as the Chiefs make their way into the Commanders’ territory. KC then takes a 14-7 lead as Mahomes finds Kareem Hunt on fourth and goal.

With the Chiefs’ defense also stepping up, KC quickly went up 21-7 as Mahomes led another great drive, connecting with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and then Travis Kelce in the endzone for touchdown number 3. With about 8 minutes left in the game, Mahomes throws his third touchdown, this time finding Rice as the Chiefs end up blowing out the Commanders 28-7 in week 8 on national television.

Chiefs vs Commanders Monday Night Football Game Stats

Although Patrick Mahomes got off to a rocky start with consecutive picks in his first two drives, he showed his typical Mahomes’ Magic the rest of the night, finishing with 299 passing yards and 3 touchdowns to go along with the 2 interceptions. He also added 30 yards on the ground.

Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice were the best receivers for the Chiefs, with 6 catches for 99 yards and a touchdown for the tight end, and 9 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown for the receiver. Kelce came down with his 83rd regular-season touchdown of his career, tying the franchise record with Priest Holmes for the most touchdowns for the Chiefs.

For the Commanders, Marcus Mariota had a decent first half, but then found the going quite tough as the KC defense shifted gears. He finished with 213 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Jeremy McNichols ended as the Commanders’ top receiver, catching 5 balls for 64 yards.

The Chiefs are now 5-3 heading into a tough Week 9 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Despite the win, they are locked in a tough 3-way battle in the AFC West with the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers.

As for the Commanders, this Monday Night Football loss puts them at 3-5 as they get ready to take on the Seattle Seahawks next week. The loss also means they remain in third place in the NFC East behind the Eagles and Cowboys.
