Broncos Get Bittersweet Injury Update As CB Patrick Surtain II Does Not Require Surgery but Likely to Miss Multiple Games

Devavrat Kulkarni

Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain could be placed on IR!

The Denver Broncos continued their immensely positive start to the 2025-26 NFL season with a thumping 44-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. In doing so, the Broncos retain their hold at the top of the AFC West with a 6-2 record.

However, despite the strong win over Dallas in week 8, the Broncos have received an update on cornerback Patrick Surtain II, which could see him miss multiple upcoming games.

Patrick Surtain II Injury Update

Broncos’ top cornerback and cornerstone of the secondary unit, Patrick Surtain II, suffered what is said to be a pectoral injury. As per the latest update, Surtain is not required to undergo any surgery, but he may end up on IR, which means he would miss a minimum of 4 games.

Surtain suffered the pec injury on a pass-play just before the end of the first half against the Dallas Cowboys when he tried to go in for a tackle on wide receiver George Pickens.

The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is expected to consider a second opinion later in the week to get a better idea of the time he is likely to be out. If the 25-year-old does end up missing the Broncos’ next 4 games, then that would mean Denver will be without its star corner against the Texans, Raiders, Chiefs, and the Commanders.

In that case, Surtain could next be seen taking the field for the Broncos’ Week 14 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders on December 7.

What Does Surtain’s Injury Mean for the Broncos?

Patrick Surtain is one of the defensive leaders for the Broncos, and the fourth-year cornerback is one of the top players at his position. The Broncos are one of the more defensively sound teams in the league currently, and Surtain is a key part of that success.

With one side of the offense nearly on lockdown every single game, the Broncos’ secondary has had an easier time on defense; however, with that equation now out of the picture for the upcoming few weeks, the overall defense will have to step up to make up for Surtain’s loss.

While the Broncos currently occupy the top spot in the AFC West, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs are close on their heels. Denver cannot afford to slip up, or else it could relinquish control of the division to either of the other two teams.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
