Football is truly an odd game. One can never know how the next season will shape up differently from the previous one.

And just when we feel that a certain team will light up the league with wins, while certain others will struggle to put together a decent run, all predictions go haywire, resulting in shocking records that no one expected.

Indianapolis Colts through Week 8

The Indianapolis Colts are going through exactly that as the only team with a 7-1 record through the first 8 weeks of football. Not many would have expected the Colts to be in such a wonderful position at this time of the season, but that is the beauty and nature of this wonderful sport.

Not only have the Colts missed the playoffs for four years running, but the last time they started a season with an impeccable record was back in 2013 when they were 6-2, heading into Week 10.

Be that as it may, the focus this season has been on the overall quality of play from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. In particular, on the offense, quarterback Daniel Jones has been a revelation, while running back Jonathan Taylor is lighting up the league with his magnificent performances.

Of course, the coaching staff is definitely at the forefront of this tremendous success, but one can’t deny the invaluable effort first-time owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon has been putting into the Colts’ games herself.

Carlie Irsay-Gordon Showing the Way

Jim Irsay, the father of Carlie Irsay-Gordon, took ownership of the Colts in 1997. He held that position until his death this offseason in May 2025. Wanting to keep the team within the family, Gordon passed on the ownership to his three daughters, Carlie, Kalen Jackson, and Casey Foyt.

Carlie, 45, has taken up the CEO responsibilities of the team after having been the vice chair/owner for the past 13 years. However, what is striking is the fact that she is seen at the Colts’ games standing on the sidelines with a headpiece, a pen, and a writing pad as she takes down notes during the game. Earlier in the season, there were mixed views on this, as some felt that she should stay away from that aspect of the game and let the professional coaches take care of their jobs.

However, with the way the Colts are playing and expressing themselves on the field in the first half of the season, it would be foolish to argue against her methods. Irsay-Gordon not only seems to be gaining much more understanding of the play calls, the working of the system, while also taking accountability for her decisions, but she has also brought about a cultural change within the organization that is paying dividends at least for the time being.

Why Irsay-Gordon Wears a Headpiece?

The first-year owner has come out and publicly clarified her stance on why she likes to wear the headset and remain on the sidelines during the games. As per Irsay-Gordon, the whole point of her ideology is not to micro-manage the coaching staff, but it is her way of gaining a deeper understanding of the game’s complexities.

It helps her to understand everything that is happening around the game, thus enabling her to be more supportive of the coaching staff and the players as she comes to know exactly where the fault lies.

Despite her somewhat unorthodox approach to the Colts’ games, while most owners sit in luxury boxes in the VIP suites and let the professionals handle everything on the field, Indianapolis has seen only positive things so far this season. And if the team is winning and the culture change is positive, then Carlie Irsay-Gordon may just have hit the nail on its head with her way of managing things.
