“We lose spirit, we lose life”- Stephen Curry opens up after Warriors’ worst loss in 40 years during MLK Day slate

The Boston Celtics handed the Golden State Warriors their worst loss 125-85 in 40 years at home during the NBA’s MLK Day 2025 slate. The game saw Jayson Tatum leading the Celtics with a match-high performance of 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. It was followed by Kristaps Porzingis chipping in 18 points to the team’s total.

On the other hand, Stephen Curry came up with 18 points but couldn’t do much from three-point range and ended with just 4-of-12. Apart from him, Moses Moody added 13 points, while Andrew Wiggins struggled and missed all four of his 3-points, finishing for just 1-of-11.

Needless to say, the team missed the likes of Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski and Kyle Anderson, who are out due to injury.

The Warriors’ superstar guard Stephen Curry was dejected with the brutal loss, and provided an explanation for the struggles the team has been facing this season.

“A big part of our season has been when we can’t score, we lose spirit, we lose life, we lose competitiveness,” Curry, averaging at 22.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists, said during the post-match interview.

“We can get away with it against some teams, against the defending champs, it’s not a good formula for success,” the 36-year-old added.

We’ve got to flush this one down the toilet: Steve Kerr backs his players despite historic loss

It was the Warriors’ sixth loss by 40 points or so since they moved to California in 1962, and first since they recorded a 149-104 loss to Dallas on January 15, 1985. However, despite the heartbreaking defeat, head coach Steve Kerr showed confidence in his side and backed his players.

Speaking to the media after the game, Kerr said, “We’re not a team that gets layups or free throws. It’s just not in our DNA.” “We have to shoot a lot of threes and we will continue to do so. Nights like tonight where they don’t go, it’s a tough road,” Kerr added.

“We’ve got to flush this one down the toilet and get ready for Sac. We’ve been very competitive all year. Our guys have fought, but we’ve had a handful of these where we get blown out. These are demoralizing.”

Though the 59-year-old called the loss “demoralizing”, he went on to say that the players need to focus on the next game.

“We’ve got to flush this one down the toilet and get ready for Sac. We’ve been very competitive all year. Our guys have fought, but we’ve had a handful of these where we get blown out. These are demoralizing,” Kerr continued.

Notably, the Warriors had a promising 12-3 start of the season, but they are now reeling on a 21-21 record, and currently occupy the 11th spot in the Western Conference standings. They lock horns with the Sacramento Kings Wednesday, January 22.
