Reports on a potential contract extension between the Toronto Blue Jays and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remain contradictory. Baseball insider Mike Rodriguez recently suggested the two sides are “very close” to finalizing a deal worth more than $500 million, but Guerrero himself has denied knowledge of such negotiations.

“Well, until now, I don’t know anything,” Guerrero told ESPN’s Jorge Castillo in Spanish. “I’ve always tried to talk to my agent and I’ve always left that to my agent. I focus on playing. Until now, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

This contradicts the original timeline, as Guerrero had previously stated he would not negotiate after spring training began. The 26-year-old slugger is eligible for free agency after the 2025 season.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Guerrero is seeking $500 million, while the Blue Jays have reportedly offered contracts with substantial deferrals that reduce their present-day value. Earlier negotiations appeared to stall when Guerrero did not accept Toronto’s offer by his self-imposed February deadline.

Guerrero has started the 2025 season batting .222 (6-for-27) with three doubles and three RBIs through seven games. Over his career, he holds a .287/.362/.499 slash line and is coming off a 30-homer, 103-RBI season in 2024.

The Blue Jays recently extended catcher Alejandro Kirk for $58 million over five years and may look to re-sign shortstop Bo Bichette, who becomes a free agent after this season.
