The Arizona Diamondbacks’ victory celebration against the Washington Nationals was dampened Friday night when All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte sustained a left hamstring strain that will likely send him to the injured list.

Just two days after securing his future with the team through a six-year contract extension, Marte pulled up in visible pain while rounding first base on what should have been a triple. The injury occurred during the game’s second at-bat, forcing an early exit as Marte grimaced and gestured toward his left leg before limping off the field with assistance from the training staff.

“We’re evaluating his condition, but he’s probably headed to the IL,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed after the team’s 6-4 win at Nationals Park. “Our organization prepares for these challenges. While the timing isn’t ideal, we have capable players ready to step in until his return.”

This isn’t Marte’s first encounter with hamstring problems. In 2021, he spent significant time on the injured list with similar issues, first missing over a month (April 8 to May 18) with a right hamstring strain before later developing a left hamstring strain that sidelined him again in late June.

Losing Marte is a substantial blow to Arizona’s lineup. The versatile infielder ranks among MLB’s elite performers both defensively and offensively this season. His defensive metrics place him in the 93rd percentile for outs above average, while his batting prowess ranks in the top 10% of major leaguers across multiple statistical categories, including expected batting average, slugging percentage, and exit velocity.

Garrett Hampson, who replaced Marte in Friday’s contest, performed admirably by going 1-for-3 with a walk and scoring twice while providing solid defense. His performance offers some immediate reassurance for the Diamondbacks, who plan to have Marte return to Arizona after Sunday’s series finale. Is he really a replacement though?

The organization has several potential replacement options at Triple-A Reno, including veteran Ildemaro Vargas, who impressed during spring training despite not currently occupying a spot on the 40-man roster. Prospects Tim Tawa and Grae Kessinger are already on the 40-man roster, with Tawa having extensive minor league experience at second base, though he has yet to make his major league debut.

Other possibilities include Blaze Alexander, currently on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain, and top prospect Jordan Lawlar, though both are natural shortstops rather than second basemen.

Beyond the defensive adjustments, the Diamondbacks face the larger challenge of replacing Marte’s offensive production, particularly as their pitching staff works to find consistency early in the season.
