Victor Wembanyama Eyes NBA History Even After Missing Nearly Half the Season!

Eric D

Victor Wembanyama has not played a single game since the all-star break and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Wembanyama as the number one overall pick, there were a lot of expectations surrounding him. After all he was looked at as the most talented and the most hyped prospect since LeBron James himself. Just a couple of games into his rookie year, we already knew the kind of talent Wembanyama was. With his defense, outside shooting, ball handling, and game IQ, it was pretty clear that he was a generational talent, and somehow the San Antonio Spurs landed themselves another superstar, just some few years after Spurs’ legend Tim Duncan retired.

How Was Wemby Performing in His Sophomore Season?

In the 2024-25 season, Wemby was on pace to win his first Defensive Player of the Year and was averaging 3.8 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. Many believe that he was robbed of the DPOY award last season, after the NBA handed it out to Rudy Gobert. With the way Wemby plays defense, he could win 4/5 DPOYs or perhaps even more, by the time he is done playing in the league.

He also improved his shooting percentages this season and was making 47.6 percent of his shots from the field compared to 46.5 percent in his rookie season, and his scoring averages jumped from 21.4 points, all the way to 24.3 points this season, earning him his first All-Star nod. However, after playing in the All-Star game, it was announced that Wemby will miss the rest of the season particularly due to a him being diagnosed with a blood clot on his right shoulder.

Now that he’s out, the Spurs are not playing for much and they’re already out of the playoff or the play-in picture and they will have to plan for the next season. Despite Wemby not playing since the All-Star break, he has still remained dominant. Let us tell you why.

Wemby Is Leading the Spurs in Almost Every Major Statistical Category Despite Being Ruled Out for the Season

Wembanyama hasn’t played an NBA game since the All-Star break but he still leads the San Antonio Spurs in three major statistical category which are block, rebounds, and points by +150 each. It is hard to lead a team in one statistical category, let alone three!

Wemby was averaging 24.3 points, 3.8 blocks, and 11.0 rebounds per game, and had only played in 46 games in the 2024-25 season. He single handedly makes the Spurs significantly better on both sides, when he’s on the court. Wembanyama is on course to become the first player in NBA history to lead his team in three major statistical categories despite missing 40% or more of the games.
