The Victor Wembanyama injury has been a major blow to the San Antonio Spurs as well as the rival fans of the NBA. He is ruled out for the rest of the season with a deep vein thrombosis, in simpler terms a “blood clot” in his right shoulder.

Victor Wembanyama’s return timeline remains unknown as we look at some of the players who have made comebacks after suffering from a blood clot injury.

The 22-year old rookie, Ausar Thompson also suffered from a blood clot injury in March, 2024. The forward returned after eight months but was ruled out for the start of the 2024-25 season. The team cleared him to make his return on November 11, and since then, he has contributed significantly to the Detroit Pistons’ rise. He averages 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while playing lockdown perimeter defense.

The 27-year old star, Brandon Ingram also suffered from deep veins thrombosis in March 2019. The team ruled the forward out for the remainder of the season, and he returned the following season on October 22, 2019. During his recovery, the Lakers traded him to the New Orleans Pelicans. He made a remarkable comeback and was named the Most Improved Player of the Year, and earned his first and only All-Star appearance in 2019.

The Spurs believe this is an isolated condition which means it’s an non-recurring injury and not related to chronic or genetic disorder, according to Shams Charania. The early signs gives hope to the fans that this wouldn’t become a problem for the French superstar down the road.

Chris Bosh’s career cut short due to blood clot injuries

Severe blood clot injuries cut Chris Bosh’s career short. Doctors diagnosed Bosh after the All-Star break when he experienced severe chest pain. On February 21, they diagnosed him with blood clots in his lungs (pulmonary embolism). The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season. He returned back on October 28, 2015, but the second occurrence came the same season in February, 2016. The player suffered a calf injury, and doctors found another blood clot in his legs during the diagnosis. The team ruled him out for the rest of the season, and he failed to clear the pre-season physical. Later, the Miami Heat waived the forward, and they retired his jersey in 2019.
