Who will enter the last eight?
“Welcome to the show,” exclaimed American southpaw Taylor Townsend upon reaching the 2025 US Open Round of 16. Such has been the level of entertainment, as the women have put on a phenomenal show during the opening week at Flushing Meadows. While the Top-3 seeds still remain, a whole host of contenders will look to topple them from the draw.

The women’s singles pre-quarterfinals will be played on Sunday, 31 August and Monday, 1 September. Here’s all you need to know about the match-ups and potential rivalries to look forward to:
Sunday:
Monday:
The two best players in the world will compete in their respective pre-quarterfinals on different days. World No. 1 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is set to take on unseeded Spaniard Cristina Bucsa on Sunday evening. Provided the Belarusian powerhouse can come through the contest, there could be a mouth-watering quarterfinal against Elena Rybakina lined up on Tuesday.
The other end of the draw will feature Iga Swiatek battling 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia. The Polish sensation, arguably the most in-form WTA starlet at the moment, has won four out of her six matches against Alexandrova. The match will take place on Monday at TBD. A victory for the 24-year-old could confirm a rematch of the Wimbledon 2025 final against Amanda Anisimova – the American will face Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in her Round of 16.

In perhaps the match of the tournament thus far, two former champions are set to collide. No. 3 seed Coco Gauff will meet four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the US Open 2025 Round of 16 on Monday. It will be their first clash in 2025, and second at this event. Gauff leads the head-to-head against Osaka by 3-2, including victories in their last two encounters.
The winner of Coco Gauff vs Naomi Osaka will take on either Karolina Muchova or Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinal stage.
