US Open 2025: Coco Gauff Moves One Step Closer to Matching Venus Williams’ Iconic Record

Coco Gauff reaches round 4 of the 2025 US Open.

After struggling in the first two rounds, Coco Gauff finally showed her old self against Magdalena Frech. The 2023 US Open winner emerged out of the gate in high spirits and was dominant throughout the match. In the end, Gauff defeated Frech 6-3, 6-1 to book her place in the round of 16. However, this win didn’t just elongate Gauff’s US Open journey; it also took her one step closer to Venus Williams’ iconic American record.

Coco Gauff Chases Venus Williams’ Grand Slam Feat

It’s been a rather pleasure to watch Gauff’s rise in tennis. At 21, the American has become one of the premier athletes of her generation. Though she has won 2 Grand Slams already, there’s another record that she’s closing in on – most appearances by an American in round 4 of a Grand Slam before turning 22. The leader? Venus Williams at 17. Coco Gauff at 16 is now just second only to the legend.

Gauff will be turning 22 in March. So there’s still a chance for Gauff to touch Williams’ record at the Australian Open. Certainly, it’s a great achievement for Gauff, who moved ahead of Serena Williams after her win over Frech. More importantly, however, Gauff showed remarkable control over her serves – something that has been troubling her since her French Open win.

Gauff Overcomes Serve Issues Right In Time for Naomi Osaka Clash

Since the French Open, Coco Gauff has struggled mightily with her serves. Most of her matches have been marked with ridiculous double faults and sometimes even early exits. The issue became so bothersome that Gauff had to enlist Gavin MacMillan to help with her serves. As one remembers, Macmillan is a biomechanics specialist who helped Aryna Sabalenka work on her serves that ultimately led her to becoming a world No.1.

So now, Gauff will be facing off against Naomi Osaka. This will be their first meeting in the US Open since 2019, when Osaka beat Gauff in straight sets. “It would be a cool kind of déjà vu, but hopefully with a different result,” Gauff said about her match with Osaka. “I remember it was a tough moment because it was such a hyped-up match. Looking back, I put way too much pressure on myself, thinking I had a chance to do something. I probably did, but I felt more expectation than belief.”

Since then, Coco Gauff has led this rivalry with a 3-2 score. So will Gauff continue her winning run against Osaka, or will Osaka add to her New York record against Gauff? We’ll find out soon.
