The UFC Vancouver prelims deliver a compelling lightweight battle with serious implications for both fighters’ futures. Kyle Prepolec vs Drew Dober pairs a hometown hero against a grizzled veteran desperately needing to stop his slide.
Prepolec returned to the UFC earlier this year after spending time in regional promotions, but his comeback didn’t go as planned. Benoît Saint Denis submitted him in the second round, continuing Prepolec’s struggles inside the Octagon. Dober has been a UFC mainstay for years. However, the wheels have fallen off lately as he’s dropped 3 consecutive fights. His most recent losses came via stoppage against Manuel Torres and Jean Silva, raising concerns about his chin holding up.This matchup represents a classic crossroads bout where the winner survives and the loser faces serious questions about their UFC future.
Prepolec brings a record of 18-9 and stands 5’10” tall with a 70 inch reach. He lands just 2.87 significant strikes per minute at 35% accuracy. Prepolec absorbs a concerning 5.19 strikes per minute as his striking defense sits at just 49%. Prepolec has never attempted a takedown in the UFC, preferring to keep fights standing. His takedown defense is alarming at only 40%, making him extremely vulnerable to wrestlers. Prepolec has zero submission attempts in the UFC, as his game revolves entirely around striking despite limited output.
Dober enters with an extensive record of 27-15-1 NC and stands 5’8”with a 70 inch reach. He lands 4.36 significant strikes per minute at 40% accuracy. Dober absorbs 4.33 strikes per minute and his striking defense checks in at 51%. He averages 0.66 takedowns per fight at just 17% accuracy, as wrestling has never been his strength. His takedown defense sits at 56%, making him vulnerable but better than Prepolec. Dober averages only 0.1 submissions per fight, as his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt hasn’t translated to many submission attempts in the UFC.
FanDuel has Drew Dober as a massive favorite at -420. Meanwhile, Kyle Prepolec comes back as a significant underdog at +330. These odds reflect the enormous gap in experience, output, and finishing ability between these fighters.
The odds for the fight going the distance have also come out. The odds for the fight seeing the judges scorecards stand at +156. The probability of the fight ending before the final bell is higher and the odds (-200) reflect that.
This fight will be decided by whether Dober’s experience and pressure can overwhelm Prepolec early. Dober lands nearly double the significant strikes per minute, which should create serious problems for Prepolec’s already poor defense.
Prepolec’s only chance is using his height and reach to keep Dober at distance while fighting smart. However, his low output and terrible striking defense suggest he will struggle to implement any game plan. Dober’s aggressive southpaw pressure should break Prepolec down quickly.
If we bet on the fight, we are going with Drew Dober to win via KO/TKO.
