The UFC made its historic debut in Baku, Azerbaijan last night, and what a night it turned out to be. This marked the first time the promotion ventured into the Caucasus region, bringing mixed martial arts to a brand new audience hungry for elite level competition. The Baku Crystal Hall hosted the action packed UFC Baku card that delivered everything from stunning upsets to dominant performances that had the local crowd on their feet all night long.

UFC’s expansion into new markets has always been a priority for Dana White, and Azerbaijan represented another stepping stone in their global conquest. The card featured a mix of international talent with several local fighters getting the chance to shine in front of their home crowd. From the preliminary fights all the way through the main event, fans witnessed the excitement that makes MMA such a captivating sport. UFC Baku Main Card Results

The main event featured former light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill taking on the dangerous striker Khalil Rountree Jr. The bout turned into a showcase for Rountree’s devastating leg kicks and power punching. Rountree dominated from start to finish, landing crushing leg kicks that visibly damaged Hill’s right leg and following up with precise combinations that dropped his opponent multiple times. The judges scored it 49-46 and 50-45 twice, giving Rountree the biggest win of his career and potentially launching him into title contention.

Rafael Fiziev reminded everyone why he’s considered one of the most dangerous lightweights in the world. He delivered a masterful performance against rising prospect Ignacio Bahamondes in the co main event. The Azerbaijani crowd favorite showcased his complete skill set, mixing beautiful striking with well timed takedowns to earn a unanimous 30-27 decision across all three scorecards. Fiziev’s defensive work was particularly impressive, making Bahamondes miss repeatedly while countering with accurate combinations.

Curtis Blaydes had to dig deep to survive a serious scare from newcomer Rizvan Kuniev in their heavyweight clash. The top five contender found himself in unexpected trouble when his usual wrestling dominance failed him. Kuniev began finding success with his striking attack in the second round. However, Blaydes showed the heart of a veteran and managed to steal enough moments in the third round to secure a narrow split decision victory with scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 28-29.

Myktybek Orolbai made a massive statement by finishing hometown favorite Tofiq Musayev with a first round kimura submission. Orolbai took the fight to the ground early and never let Musayev get comfortable, eventually securing the submission at 4:35 of the opening round.

Nazim Sadykhov gave the home crowd something to cheer about with a thrilling second round knockout of Nikolas Motta. After surviving an early storm from Motta in the first round, Sadykhov turned the tables in the second round. He began landing clean strikes from all angles. The end came suddenly when ‘The Black Wolf’ dropped Motta with a perfectly timed right hand. This forced referee Lukasz Bosacki to step in at 4:17 of round two.

The main card opener between featherweights Muhammad Naimov and Bogdan Grad delivered a back and forth battle. Naimov stunned Grad early with a beautiful spinning hook kick that had the crowd gasping. However, Grad showed tremendous heart by recovering and using his grappling skills to stay competitive throughout the fight. All three rounds were closely contested but Naimov’s slightly cleaner work earned him unanimous 29-28 scores from all three judges.

UFC Baku Preliminary Card Results

The preliminary card featured some incredible performances that proved the depth of talent. Seok Hyeon Ko pulled off a major upset in his UFC debut by completely shutting out Welsh prospect Oban Elliott with dominant grappling over three rounds. JunYong Park overcame serious adversity, including an illegal knee that cut him. This cost his opponent two points and he went on to defeat Ismail Naurdiev. Meanwhile, Darya Zhelezniakova avenged a previous loss to Melissa Mullins with a convincing decision victory. Poland’s Klaudia Sygula earned her first UFC win with a clean sweep of Russian Irina Alekseeva.

Tagir Ulanbekov edged out Azat Maksum in a closely contested battle. Both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev were shouting instructions from his corner. Mohammed Usman closed out the night’s action by overcoming a slow start to defeat Hamdy Abdelwahab in the heavyweight opener.
