Daniel Cormier reacts to rumors of Jon Jones’ huge payday for a potential heavyweight title fight with Tom Aspinall!

Money talks have always been a hot topic in the UFC, with allegations of low fighter pay to monumental figures like the recent rumored $30 million for a Jon Jones fight. The man who dominated light heavyweight for years before moving up to heavyweight isn’t just known for his incredible skills. He is also pretty savvy when it comes to negotiations about getting paid.

Fighter pay was nowhere near what fans see now. Daniel Cormier remembers when getting a ‘big bump’ for a short-notice fight was considered massive news, though that number would probably make today’s top fighters chuckle.

Daniel Cormier Pours Cold Water On Prospective Massive Payday For Jon Jones

Jon Jones is reportedly asking for $30 million to fight Tom Aspinall. That’s not just a big number, that’s a “buy yourself a private island” kind of money! But Daniel Cormier, who’s had his fair share of battles with Jones both in and out of the cage, surprisingly doesn’t think this ask is completely crazy.

He pointed out that with gate revenues hitting $16 million, plus pay-per-view buys and sponsorships, the math starts making more sense. While ‘DC’ doesn’t think Jones will get the full $30 million, he believes landing even half that amount would be a win.

“You can do 16 mil at the gate, you can do whatever you do on pay-per-view, you’ve got sponsorships for the fight night, those aren’t yours, you are bringing them on… I’m not sure he gets to 30, but if you ask for 30 and you get 20 or you get 15, that’s a win for Jon Jones on his way out,” said Cormier via his YouTube channel.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan seems to think the UFC might actually shell out the full $30 million to make this fight happen. While that might be optimistic, it’s clear that top-tier fighters are starting to command bigger paydays.

Dana White has already guaranteed that Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall will happen this year. Now, it’s just a matter of finding that magic number that makes everyone happy!
