Brandon Moreno’s MMA Journey

Brandon Moreno’s path to UFC stardom is epic. The Tijuana native started training MMA after failing to find a capoeira school in his hometown. He turned pro in 2011 and fought his way through regional promotions before earning a spot on The Ultimate Fighter in 2016. Despite losing on the show, the UFC signed him anyway. In a remarkable twist, Moreno made his UFC debut while his season was still airing on television.

Moreno’s career has been defined by resilience and perseverance. After an initial 3-2 UFC run, he was surprisingly cut from the promotion in 2018. Rather than give up, he captured the Legacy Fighting Alliance flyweight title and earned his way back to the UFC. His career reached new heights in his epic four-fight series with Deiveson Figueiredo (this was the first tetralogy in the UFC). This saw Moreno become Mexico’s first UFC champion when he submitted Figueiredo at UFC 263.

Though he lost the belt to Alexandre Pantoja in 2023, Moreno has remained a top contender. His most recent outing saw him outpoint Amir Albazi last November, keeping him firmly in the title picture. At 31, Moreno brings a wealth of experience with nearly a decade in the UFC and multiple championship fights on his resume.

Steve Erceg’s MMA Journey

Steve Erceg represents the new wave of Australian MMA talent following the country’s fighting pioneers. He doesn’t have the experience or the credentials like Moreno but he is just starting to build up. ‘Astroboy’ built his reputation on the Australian regional scene, competing in promotions like Eternal MMA where he captured the flyweight title.

His road to the UFC wasn’t smooth. Visa issues twice derailed scheduled appearances on Dana White’s Contender Series and his initial UFC debut. When Erceg finally reached the UFC in 2023, he made an immediate impact. He upset David Dvorak in his debut and followed with victories over Alessandro Costa and Matt Schnell, with the latter earning him a Performance of the Night bonus. His rapid ascent earned him a surprise title shot against Alexandre Pantoja just three fights into his UFC career.

Though he fell short against the champion, he performed admirably. His momentum took another hit when he lost via first-round knockout to Kai Kara-France last August. Now riding a two-fight losing streak, Erceg faces enormous pressure against Moreno.
