A clash between the in-form Paul and the veteran Khananov

Day 6 of the 2025 Roland Garros continues in Paris with third-round action underway. The second match of the day on Court Simonne-Mathieu will be a men’s clash between the 12th seed, Tommy Paul, and the 24th seed Karen Khachanov.

This third-round encounter between the pair will be their third career matchup, with the winner advancing to the round of 16 to play either Nuno Borges or Alexei Popyrin.

Tommy Paul vs Karen Khachanov Preview

So far, the American 12th seed, Paul has had a challenging time on court at this year’s French Open. He came from a set down to defeat Elmer Moller in the first round, while he was taken the distance in his second-round win against Marton Fucsovics.

This year, Paul has had some pretty good results, although none of his runs have resulted in titles. He started off the season by reaching the semis at the Adelaide International, followed by a quarter-final at the Australian Open, more semi-finals in Dallas, Houston, and Rome. Paul has hit 167 aces and holds a high service games won percentage with 82%.

Khachanov has reached the third round with a routine three-set win over Aleksandar Vukic in the first round, but was tested to the brink in the second round by Sebastian Ofner, finally getting over the hum 6-2 in the fifth set.

The Russian has had a mixed year so far, entering the French Open with a 12-12 record. His only meaningful run this year has been the semi-final he made in Barcelona. Despite his unfavorable results, Khachanov has still fired 129 aces, and holds a service games won percentage of 78%, and has converted on 41% of his break points.

Both players have the game to cause problems to the other, but the main difference this year between the two has been the American’s better form and consistency. Khachanov hasn’t put together a solid performance yet, and that could be the real difference in today’s match.

Prediction: Paul in five sets

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
