Days after coming out second best against Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart, Aryna Sabalenka is looking for a quick turnaround at the 2025 Madrid Open. The 26-year-old is displaying great form this year, and has runner-up points to defend in the Spanish capital. After losing an agonisingly close final to Iga Swiatek last year in Madrid, can the Belarusian powerhouse go one step further this year?

Aryna Sabalenka is fully justifying her World No. 1 ranking in 2025. She won the Brisbane International trophy before a finalist’s finish in Melbourne Park. After a poor Middle Eastern swing, the three-time Grand Slam champion reached three consecutive finals at Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart. However, Sabalenka has been unable to leap over the last hurdle and win the Porsche in Stuttgart (lost four finals). For the lack of a better option, the World No. 1 has made a big splurge.

Courtesy of a ruthless display of shotmaking by Ostapenko, it wasn’t meant to be for Sabalenka in the 2025 Stuttgart Open final. In spite of her best efforts to forge a comeback, the crowd witnessed a rare occasion of the WTA star being overpowered. “I’m glad I can afford this car so you know what? After this final, I’m going to go and order one because I guess this is the only way for me,” Sabalenka said in the Stuttgart trophy presentation.

Not backing down on her word, the Belarusian has now placed an order for the same. “I did order my car,” she said ahead of the 2025 Madrid Open. “I think we’re going for GTRS – purple colour. You know what, I’m so tired of losing the final so I decided I will go for the craziest car there.” Although it is unclear as to what precise Porsche model Sabalenka has purchased, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS costs approximately $245-250K.

One of the big factors for Ostapenko’s win was her first serve. While the Latvian won 81% points behind her first serve, her attacking return position meant that Sabalenka managed a mere 53% points on first serve. Additionally, her movement was also superior on the night – the 27-year-old was able to run around and match Sabalenka’s power – changing angles and producing winners at will.

After racing off the blocks to 2-0, Ostapenko saw her lead vanish when Sabalenka pulled back for 4-4. However, a break in the ninth game was decisive as ‘Penko’ held to take the opener 6-4 in just under an hour. Contrary to what the capacity Stuttgart crowd expected, the Latvian continued her domination in Set-2. A tired Sabalenka had no answers, losing 4-6 1-6 after an Ostapenko return winner sealed the deal.

Currently ranked No. 18 in the world, Ostapenko also beat Iga Swiatek in the same tournament. She also improved her finals record to 9-9 in the process. Sabalenka suffered her fourth loss in the Stuttgart summit clash; meanwhile, Ostapenko is the only active player to reach finals on outdoor hard courts, indoor hard courts, green clay, outdoor clay, indoor clay and carpet grass.

Promising to speed through Miami in her new car very soon, can Aryna Sabalenka race past the competition in Madrid this week? Regardless, the World No. 1’s major focus will be on Roland Garros.
