Gauff lost to Keys in the Round of 16 last year.
Looking for a resurgence after a baffling start to her 2025 season, Coco Gauff will hope that the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open brings some positivity. The World No. 4 takes on Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska on Thursday for a spot in Round-3. The winner is likely to face former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 32.
Having won the 2024 WTA Finals, Coco Gauff started the season as a strong contender for every title out there. On the contrary, the American prodigy is still searching for her first title of 2025. A former US Open champ herself, Gauff won merely 5 matches in 5 tournaments across the Middle East, USA and Germany before coming into Madrid. She also lost her No. 3 ranking to compatriot Jessica Pegula.
At the recently concluded Stuttgart Open, Dayana Yastremska was forced to retire from her Round of 32 match-up vs eventual winner Jelena Ostapenko. The 24-year-old reached the Round of 32 at the Australian Open, before achieving her season-best runner-up finish in Linz. Yastremska faced some unfortunate losses to Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic, before heading to Madrid. She beat Francesca Jones in Round-1.
Coco Gauff leads the head to head record against Dayana Yastremska by 2-0. Both their previous meetings have been on outdoor clay courts.
Coincidentally, the first encounter between Gauff and Yastremska was at this very tournament. At the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, No. 3 seed Gauff comfortably defeated her Ukrainian counterpart. A few weeks later, they locked horns at the Roland Garros Grand Slam, where the 21-year-old notched another straight sets win to enter the last 16 stage.

Considering Coco Gauff’s past performances on clay, she knows how to get the job done. We believe the American will do everything in her power to gain some much-needed momentum ahead of Roland Garros. Although there is a chance that Yastremska offers resistance, the American should come through when it’s all said and done.
Prediction: Coco Gauff in three sets.
Coco Gauff Win: 1/3
Dayana Yastremska Win: 13/4
