Terry McLaurin Absent From Training Camp – Commanders Place Wide Receiver on Reserve List

NFL training camps have commenced, and that means preparations for the upcoming season are now in full swing. While most teams have all of their players back at practice, the Washington Commanders are missing out on their most important pass-catcher, Terry McLaurin.

The Commanders’ WR1 has been involved in a contract standoff with the organization throughout the offseason. The contract saga continues to play its part as both parties are still unable to see eye to eye on the matter at hand.

McLaurin Missing From Commanders Training Camp

As per the latest reports, the Commanders started their training camp yesterday, and while everyone else was present, McLaurin was the sole absentee. NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported that the Commanders have placed him on the reserve/did not report list.

The team also conducted a conditioning test, and no guesses here, McLaurin was a no-show for that as well. ESPN’s NFL insider, Adam Schefter, provided an update regarding the same.

“Terry McLaurin did not show up to the commander training facility for the start of training camp with the other veterans. The commanders took a conditioning test. Terry McLaurin was not there for the start of it. He has been seeking a new contract. He voiced his displeasure and frustration with the team last week.”

It is evident that the contract standoff has led the 29-year-old to take such a drastic decision. However, missing out on training camp also means he will be fined $50,000 for each day he holds out. Schefter also emphasized that although McLaurin was not present yesterday, he could still show up in the upcoming days.

Terry McLaurin Extension Update

Apparently, both parties involved in this contract dispute are unable to meet the value of the deal. The main problem lies in the fact that McLaurin and his agent seem to believe that the receiver should be making north of $30 million annually, while the Commanders seem to be far away from that figure.

“Terry McLaurin will tell you and his numbers bear out that he’s one of the best receivers in football.” Added Schefter. “We’ve seen this off-season big money deals go to Tee Higgins at about 29 million a year. We’ve seen DK Metcalf and Jamar Chase get over 30. McLaurin’s numbers compare to many of these receivers. But then you also see another great wide receiver in Mike Evans, who is a little bit older than Terry McLaurin, get $24 million a year. So is Terry McLaren north of 30? Is he around the Mike Evans’ number?”

Will McLaurin Remain With the Commanders?

As of now, the 2-time Pro Bowler is under contract with the Commanders following his three-year, $68 million rookie extension signed in 2022. However, if this situation does not get resolved and if McLaurin remains on the sidelines, there is a strong possibility that he may no longer be a Commander.

Recently, NFL insider Albert Breer indicated the New England Patriots as one team that could be interested in signing the receiver, should the Commanders look for a suitable trade partner. Of course, given the production McLaurin has showcased year-on-year, multiple other teams could also be in the mix.

That said, ESPN senior writer Jeremy Fowler believes that a deal will eventually get done and that McLaurin will remain in Washington; it’s just that both parties are still far from reaching common ground. Where McLaurin eventually ends up, nobody can tell, but the Commanders would be in serious trouble if they were to let him go.
