NFL Insider Makes Striking Revelation Between T.J. Watt’s Career Sacks and New Contract Extension

On July 18, the Pittsburgh Steelers and their star linebacker T.J. Watt finally reached an agreement on a new contract extension that will see him remain with the Steelers for the foreseeable future.

In the process, Watt has become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL with his 3-year deal worth $123 million, which works out to an average of $41 million per year. After holding out during the OTAs and mandatory minicamp during the offseason, both sides would be pleased to have completed the extension as the focus can shift completely on the season ahead.

But, while nobody from the organization picked up on one small detail from Watt’s extension, ESPN’s NFL insider, Adam Schefter, noticed an interesting coincidence.

T.J. Watt’s Career Sacks Same as his Guaranteed Money

While speaking as a guest on the ‘Pat McAfee Show’ as he usually does, ESPN’s insider, Adam Schefter, spoke at length about the holdup in getting the extension over the line.

Schefter provided some insights on why the contract took as much time as it did, saying that the main issue at hand looked to be the length of the extension. As per the insider, Watt was looking for a 4-year extension, while the Steelers wanted to give him a 2-year deal.

“I think the issue really when they were sitting down and talking was length. I think the Steelers would have preferred a shorter term deal, and T.J. Watt would have wanted a longer term deal, and they always were going to resign him as we talked about.”

Nevertheless, while both parties seem to have compromised on the length of the extension, Schefter pointed out that coincidentally, Watt’s $108 million guarantee is the same as his 108 career sacks in the NFL to date.

“It was pretty incredible cuz TJ Watt has 108 sacks in his career, and the guaranteed money was $108 million. And I asked, was that coincidental? Did we know? They didn’t even realize it. Did you guys do this on purpose? 108 sacks, 108 million guaranteed. And they didn’t realize it until it was raised that that was exactly how it matched up, his career sacks and the guaranteed money.”

This piece of information that Schefter brought to the forefront is actually quite impressive, and another reminder of how the world works in its own mysterious way.

What is equally worth noting is that the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has 108 sacks in just 8 seasons, which is an average of 13.5 sacks per year, which includes his 2022 season when he missed 7 games due to injury.

Now that the 30-year-old has been rewarded handsomely for his efforts on the field, it is time for him to once again live up to his lofty expectations. The Steelers have made quite a few roster changes this offseason, and there is a good chance they can go deeper in the playoffs if everything clicks together.
