The world of tennis as well as sports was left in awe on Sunday, as World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz weaved his magic on Court Philippe-Chatrier. In one of the greatest finals in the history of the sport, Alcaraz came back from two sets down to save three championship points en route to a 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(10-2) triumph over Jannik Sinner. With sporting and pop-culture royalty seated in the stands, the two warriors undoubtedly played out a match that one would consider a privilege to witness.

The match lasted 5 hours 29 minutes in total – the longest final in Roland Garros history. It was also the second longest Grand Slam summit clash ever. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic competed in the only clash that lasted longer than this humdinger (2012 Australian Open final). The Roland Garros tournament is one of the biggest spectacles in the world of sport. When the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players in the world battle it out for the title, the stakes only get higher. There was a staggering response to the magnificent tennis that was on display over the weekend. Despite both players never losing a Grand Slam final prior to Sunday, it was Alcaraz who ended up upholding the feat.

Taking to social media, the celebrities began gathering in appreciation of two future legends of the sport. ‘Sinners’ actor Michael B. Jordan saluted the two players after the match, on his Instagram story. Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr. was mind-blown, and commented “Locura” – translating to insanity. Former UFC Champion Ilia Topuria, a fellow Spaniard, lauded the Murcia-born 22-year-old for being an ‘idol and the example of never giving up.’

Tennis players were not far behind in singing praise of Sinner and Alcaraz. King of Roland Garros Rafael Nadal stated, “What a great Roland Garros final! Congratulations Carlos Alcaraz, congrats also to Jannik Sinner for the great battle!” Meanwhile, women’s singles champion Coco Gauff said, “Congratulations Carlos Alcaraz, amazing comeback! We ran back Beijing.” Others like Juan Martin del Potro and Katie Boulter demanded that the trophy be given to both players for the impeccable final.

As expected, Alcaraz and Sinner were all class after the culmination of the French Open blockbuster. While the Spaniard ran up to his box, the three-time major winner sat and pondered in despair and retrospect. “Of course it’s difficult to accept now,” Sinner said in the post-match press conference. “I had lots of chances. But this is the good part of the sport and today I got the sad part. But if you watch only the sad part, you’re never going to come back.”

The champion spoke about his self-belief after the final. “I told myself that in specific moments, I had to go for it,” Alcaraz confirmed. “No matter what, no matter if I was down, no matter if I lost the fifth [set]. I just thought it was time to go for it. Don’t be afraid. Today was all about the belief in myself.”
