Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has a funny response on missing out the Davante Adams trade

Jets fans eagerly await Adams' first game with the team, promising an exciting showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mike Tomlin had quite a humorous response when asked about the current situation involving Davante Adams. The NFL sent the Steelers out to Las Vegas in Week Six to play the Raiders and scheduled them to return home for Week Seven to face the Jets. This means the team has had wide receiver Davante Adams on their radar for a while now.

Although Adams was still with the Raiders leading up to last Sunday’s game, he didn’t suit up due to a hamstring injury and a trade request. That request was granted on Tuesday when Adams was dealt to the Jets, so now head coach Mike Tomlin and his staff must prepare for the possibility of seeing him on the field this week.

However, on Tuesday, Tomlin downplayed how much that affects their game planning.

“I was getting ready for Davante last week. I’m getting ready for Davante this week, but that’s life in the National Football League,” Tomlin said, as noted on the team’s website.

When did Mike Tomlin start coaching the Steelers?

Mike Tomlin has been leading the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2007, making him the longest-tenured active coach in the NFL. He took over from Bill Cowher, a legendary coach in Steelers history, and quickly made his mark.

Before joining the Steelers, Tomlin was the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings for a year. He had previously worked with several college teams, gaining experience at places like Memphis, Cincinnati, and Arkansas State.

During his career, Tomlin has earned two Super Bowl rings, the most prominent being in 2008 when the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. He also has a Super Bowl ring from his time as a defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Bowl XXXVII.

Pittsburgh Steelers at the New York Jets

This Sunday, October 20, the New York Jets will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium for Sunday Night Football, airing on NBC and Peacock.

For the Jets, this game presents a chance to rebound after a three-game losing streak and show they’ve still got some fight. For the Steelers, it’s an opportunity to dominate an in-conference rival and show they can compete with the Baltimore Ravens, who are currently leading the AFC North.

  • Kick-off: 8:20 p.m. ET / 1:20 a.m. UK

There’s also some uncertainty surrounding the Jets’ quarterback situation. Will Justin Fields return from injury, or will Russell Wilson step in and get the start? That decision could have a significant impact on how the game plays out.

In addition, Davante Adams is expected to play this Sunday against the Steelers, interim Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed on Wednesday. Adams hasn’t seen game action since Week 3 due to a hamstring injury. However, he is expected to be a full participant in practice this week.

Adams hurt his hamstring during practice on September 26, just before the Raiders’ Week 4 game against Cleveland. Though sidelined for that matchup, he was present as the Raiders secured a victory over the Browns on September 29.

The next day, Adams made waves by requesting a trade, surprising many

Some even questioned if the injury was real, but sources within the team confirmed that Adams was, in fact, dealing with a legitimate injury.

Despite that, insiders say Adams likely could have played in the last game had it not been for the trade drama. While still at the team’s facilities for rehab, it became clear his time with the Raiders was over. He ultimately missed three games before the team traded him.

Ulbrich confirmed that Adams is on track to play this weekend.

During their time together, Adams and Rodgers formed one of the NFL’s most dynamic quarterback-receiver duos. In 2014, Adams caught Rodgers’ 200th career touchdown pass, and in 2020, he caught Rodgers’ 400th. Over their eight seasons together, the pair racked up 67 touchdown connections, 622 completions, and 7,590 yards in 108 games.

A six-time Pro Bowler, the 31-year-old Adams has proven he still has what it takes. Earlier this season in Week 2, he hauled in nine catches for 110 yards in a big win over Baltimore.
