Home favorite Kartal faces seasoned challenger Pavlyuchenkova in an unexpected but intriguing Wimbledon fourth-round battle.
The British hope Sonay Kartal will take center stage as she faces former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for the first time in the Round of 16. Kartal, making her deepest run at a Slam, has impressed with her grit, toppling 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko in three sets before cruising past Viktoriya Tomova and qualifier Diane Parry in straight sets.
Pavlyuchenkova has battled through a tough draw herself, stunning Ajla Tomljanovic in a three-set opener. Then beating the 31st seed Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets and rallying past Naomi Osaka in a comeback victory.
The show must go on 🤩

Kartal’s 2025 season has largely been inconsistent, with her best showing before Wimbledon coming at Indian Wells, where she reached the fourth round before falling to Aryna Sabalenka. Aside from that, early exits have plagued her campaign. Still, her numbers this season suggest growing confidence: 29 aces in 19 matches, 59.7% of first-serve points won, 42.6% on return, and a strong 49.6% break-point conversion rate.
Pavlyuchenkova, by contrast, started strong with a quarterfinal at the Australian Open but then hit a slump. Failing to get past the second round at any event until a resurgence in Eastbourne, where she made the semifinals. Despite her mid-season slump, her experience and stats, with 68 aces, 67.9% first-serve points won, 43% return points won, and 44.8% break-point conversion, make her a dangerous opponent on grass.
Into 4R for the first time in nine years 🤝

Kartal’s dream Wimbledon run continues with home crowd momentum and improved form, but she faces a seasoned Slam performer in Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian’s recent resurgence and big-match experience with Kartal’s fearless shot-making make this one a 50-50.
