So Upset I Turned Off TV: Jurgen Klopp Criticises Liverpool Fans for Booing Trent Alexander-Arnold

Klopp's remarks come just days before Liverpool’s final game where Alexander-Arnold is expected to feature one last time at Anfield.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has voiced his strong disapproval of the boos directed at Trent Alexander-Arnold by sections of the Anfield crowd. The German called the fan reaction “wrong” while admitting he was so disappointed that he turned off his television.

Trent Alexander-Arnold recently confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The 26-year-old right-back had been a lifelong Red who joined the club at the age of six, His expected move to Real Madrid has divided opinion among supporters and tensions came to the forefront during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Notably, Alexander-Arnold was jeered by Liverpool supporters after he came off the bench.

Speaking at a fundraising event for the LFC Foundation, Klopp passionately defended his former player, describing the booing as unjustified. The German coach, who nurtured Alexander-Arnold throughout his senior career, brought along a signed shirt of the defender for the auction.

While appearing as guest speaker at the LFC Foundation’s Gala Ball on Friday, Klopp said,

“I don’t want to tell anyone what they should think or have to think, but I can tell you what you think is wrong,”

“I don’t tell you you should not be disappointed, you should not be angry, I tell you don’t forget [what he’s done for this club]. This club doesn’t forget.

“I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I am old so I thought it might be my hearing, so I switched up the volume and the booing again. I needed another 10 seconds to realise and I switched the TV off.”

“I honestly couldn’t have been more disappointed in this moment. This is not us, 100% not us.

Klopp’s remarks come just days before Liverpool’s final game of the season, where Alexander-Arnold is expected to feature one last time at Anfield against Crystal Palace. The match will mark the end of an era for the local lad who helped deliver Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years during the 2019-20 campaign. He has also played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European success over the past few years.

Klopp’s comments echo those of Mohamed Salah, who has also urged fans to give Alexander-Arnold a proper send-off in recognition of his contributions. With a likely move to Real Madrid on the horizon, Klopp and Salah will be hoping the Anfield faithful will celebrate Alexander-Arnold’s farewell in fitting fashion.
