Former Liverpool Star Philippe Coutinho’s Interview Interrupted by Gunshots

Former Liverpool and Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho was briefly caught in a frightening moment on Wednesday. Notably, gunshots interrupted his interview at Vasco da Gama’s Moacyr Barbosa Training Centre in Rio de Janeiro. The incident unfolded during media day at the club’s facility, located in the Cidade de Deus neighbourhood.

It is understood that sounds of gunfire are not uncommon due to frequent police operations in the area. Coutinho wasn’t the only player affected as Coutinho’s teammates Nuno Moreira and goalkeeper Leo Jardim also had their media appearances interrupted as the sounds of gunfire echoed in the background.

Despite the alarming nature of the disturbance, Coutinho appeared remarkably calm, even laughing off the situation before resuming his interview. Club officials later confirmed that such noises are a regular occurrence in the region and did not indicate an immediate threat to players or staff.

Coutinho is currently back with Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, where he began his professional career. Though still under contract with Aston Villa, the Brazilian is widely expected to move on from the Premier League side. He joined Villa permanently in 2022 after an initial loan spell from Barcelona. Injuries and inconsistent form saw him register just six goals and three assists in 43 appearances for Villa.

The 31-year-old remains best remembered for his stint at Liverpool, where he contributed 54 goals and 44 assists in 201 matches. His high-profile move to Barcelona for £142 million in 2018 didn’t work out as planned as his time at the Camp Nou was marred by injuries and inconsistency. It leading to several loan moves, including stints at Bayern Munich and Aston Villa.

Now enjoying life back in Brazil, Coutinho has reunited with his boyhood club. Vasco manager Fabio Carille has yet to confirm whether the club will pursue a long-term deal for Coutinho but fans have welcomed the Brazilian’s return as a boost to their campaign.
