Scott Wedgewood Saves 25 Lead Avalanche to Shutout Victory Over Devils

Scott Wedgewood shines with 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche blank the New Jersey Devils in a dominant defensive performance.

Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the host New Jersey Devils 4-0 Sunday night at Prudential Center in Newark.

This was Wedgewood’s seventh NHL shutout and his first since January 19, 2023, when he played for the Dallas Stars. The Avalanche acquired him from the Nashville Predators on November 30. So far, he has allowed just two goals in three games, with a record of 2-1-0, and he started two of the three.

Ross Colton scored for the ninth time in 12 this season, and Casey Mittelstadt and Calvin de Haan each had two assists as they won their third of the four straight. The Avalanche enters this one at 16-13-0 overall; they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Saturday.

Jake Allen turned back 19 for the Devils (18-10-2), who have won three of their last four and six of eight coming in before tonight’s game. Colton opened it up at 4:07 of the first with a wrist shot from the right of the crease, assisted by Mittelstadt, who had just returned from a broken foot.

Jesper Bratt’s opportunity for New Jersey at 6:11 was negated by a high stick. Timo Meier almost tied the game at 7:18, but his attempt was called no goal after review since the puck had not crossed the line before play was stopped.

The Avalanche scored first, and Logan O’Connor doubled Colorado’s advantage to 2-0 at 14:52 of the first, redirecting a shot from de Haan. Artturi Lehkonen made it 3-0 on a wrist shot over Allen’s glove on a breakaway at 14:36 of the second.

The Devils were outshot 10-2 in the second period and failed to capitalize on a chance to cut the lead to two at 4:26 of the third on Meier, whose shot toward an open net was blocked by Devon Toews.

It sealed it with an empty-netter from Parker Kelly at 16:05 to give it a 4-0 final.
