Just three games into the season, the New York Giants have decided to bench starting quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart. The move isn’t as surprising as it may sound, considering the level of play Wilson has demonstrated over these three games.

Additionally, Dart received much praise during training camp and the preseason. Seen as the future of the franchise, it was expected that the youngster would be handed the keys to the Giants’ offense sometime this season. That said, the Giants hadn’t really planned for that so early in the season.

Nevertheless, Wilson has now been relegated to the bench in favor of young blood, and that raises questions surrounding the veteran signal caller’s future. Will Wilson remain in New York, or will he be shipped off to another team in need of an experienced quarterback?

Russell Wilson Potential Suitors

At this stage of Wilson’s career and with the way the past few years have gone, there is not much hope for the former Super Bowl winner. Ever since leaving Seattle in 2022, Wilson’s career has been a downward spiral.

Additionally, his age is another concerning factor, so there are limited possibilities for the 10-time Pro Bowler. Having said that, there are a few teams that could consider trading for him, even if they can get one decent season out of him.

Cincinnati Bengals

Right off the top of the head, the first team that strikes as a potential option for Wilson is the Cincinnati Bengals. Starting quarterback Joe Burrow will be out for approximately 3 months due to the turf toe injury he suffered in week 2. That means, even if he were to come back, the regular season will be nearly over.

In Jake Browning, the Bengals’ backup quarterback, Cincinnati doesn’t have the quality to lead the team to the postseason. Although he helped the Bengals get over the line against the Jaguars in week 2, last week’s horrible performance against the Vikings has cause for concern. Browning now has 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in less than 2 full games this season.

Trading for Russell Wilson may be a season-saving option for Cincy. Even though this version of Wilson is not what he used to be in his prime, the veteran signal caller would have receivers like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to work with.

New Orleans Saints

The second option that seems like a good fit is the New Orleans Saints. Their problems under center suddenly magnified following the sudden retirement of Derek Carr following the 2025 draft.

Currently, the Saints have Spence Rattler as their starter and Tyler Shough as their backup. At 0-3, Rattler has played just fine, but hasn’t been good enough to drive this team forward. From his 8 starts in the NFL in just his second season, Rattler has yet to win a game for the Saints.

Additionally, Shough is still just a rookie in the developing phase of his career. The lack of an experienced head in the room is another problem that Wilson can solve if the Saints pursue this avenue.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers shocked everyone with their 30-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons this past week. However, quarterback Bryce Young had little to do with that, as has been the case so far in his professional career.

The Panthers are still 1-2, and Young’s play has seen little improvement over the past couple of seasons. The other reason this trade could be an interesting one is the fact that Wilson has already worked with the Panthers’ current head coach, Dave Canales, for ten seasons when both of them were with the Seahawks.

At 37 years of age, it is safe to say that Wilson’s NFL career is nearing its end. Whether he remains on the bench for the Giants or another team comes for his services, only time will tell. But, there is a strong possibility that the former Steeler may be out of the league very soon.
