Renato Veiga Joins Villarreal in Club-Record Deal from Chelsea

Villarreal have confirmed the signing of Portuguese defender Renato Veiga from Chelsea in a deal worth around €29.5 million including add-ons. The Spanish club will pay an initial €24.5 million, with an additional €5 million linked to performance bonuses.

Chelsea have also included a significant sell-on clause in the agreement. Veiga becomes Villarreal’s record signing and the 11th senior player to leave Stamford Bridge this summer as Chelsea continue their squad overhaul. The 21-year-old joined the Blues from Swiss side Basel last year for €14 million.

However, he since struggled to secure a regular starting role under Enzo Maresca. He featured in just seven Premier League games. He only managed to start a single game. Though he did impress in the Conference League. There he scored twice in six appearances before being loaned to Juventus in January.

Renato Veiga, A Key Addition for Villarreal

Villarreal have acted swiftly to bolster their defensive options following the departures of Eric Bailly and Raul Albiol. Veiga is capable of playing as a centre-back, left-back, or even as a defensive midfielder. Thus versatility makes him a valuable addition for Marcelino’s side.

The Yellow Submarine have been coping with injuries to defenders Willy Kambwala and Logan Costa. So, the timing of this move is crucial. Veiga made a short but solid stint with Juventus. There, he made 15 appearances and helped the club secure Champions League qualification.

The Portuguese is now ready for a fresh challenge in La Liga. He is expected to slot straight into Villarreal’s backline as they aim to return to Europe’s elite competition. Veiga also broke into Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad earlier this year and earned five caps.

He expressed a strong desire to establish himself as a national team regular. That factor that influenced his decision to leave Chelsea in search of consistent game time. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s decision to sanction the sale aligns with their ongoing strategy to streamline the squad after heavy summer recruitment.
