Post-Match Reactions – Lyon 2 – 2 Manchester United, Ruben Amorim Talks on Andre Onana and Paul Scholes’ Harsh Comments

Andre Onana had a rough night in goal amid a heated week.

Manchester United missed out on what could’ve been an eventful away victory unless Rayan Cherki from Lyon had other plans. Scoring an equaliser in the stoppage time, Cherki took the tie to be on the level at two goals each as the contest goes to Old Trafford next week.

After Lyon scored the opener in the first 25 minutes, Manchester United pulled one back in the first half’s extra time. Starting the second half strong, United had more possession creating a few chances. Joshua Zirkzee helped Manchester United take the lead in the 88th minute. However, Lyon pulled one back in the last minute lifting the second part of the matchup next week.

Andre Onana had a rough day in goal which couldn’t have come at a much worse time. After a heated exchange with Nemanja Matic earlier this week, the Cameroon goalkeeper could’ve done better in the both of goals conceded. When asked about the incident, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, the Portuguese told TNT Sports

“Important is to think about the next Premier League and the second leg. When one player makes a mistake, the team makes a mistake so we continue like this”

The reporter asked if Onana still retains Amorim’s faith or if would he think about changing goalkeepers. To which the Portuguese manager said:

“We continue to do the same thing, train every day and try to choose the best eleven to win the game”

Conceding the last-minute goal, Amorim reflected on the situation as he said:

“We are disappointed. We should’ve taken the lead in the next game. But it is important to think the next game is our at home”

“In the second half, we adapted to the game, we did well and we can do better. We are improving game by game and let’s continue to think like that”

‘Amorim Doesn’t Like His Football Team’ – Paul Scholes on Ruben Amorim

Reacting to the interview as Amorim said the squad is improving, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes had some tough words for the current squad. When asked about Ruben Amorim’s analysis on the team, Scholes said,

“I don’t think he believes that. I don’t think he likes his football team. I think he knows he needs better, you can see that on the touchline, he always looks disappointed”

“Everyone knows we need better if we are to challenge for titles. It’s all over the pitch.”

Claiming that the current squad is far way behind Amorim’s standards, Scholes continued:

“It isn’t quite like that they have control without the quality up front. He knows it, he is never going to say it but he doesn’t like the football team”

“This team is nowhere near the standard that he wants. It might take two to three years to get where he wants the team with a lot more attacking football”

Amorim has had very few opportunities to bring in new recruitments since his arrival. Manchester United are also speculated to have a tight budget for transfers this summer given their recent expenditures.

Manchester United is currently 13th in the Premier League on the table leaving Europa League as their only chance for Champions League qualification next season. However, as things stand, the contest between them at Old Trafford could be counted as anyone’s to grab next week.
