Portugal are on the brink of booking their ticket to the 2026 World Cup as they prepare to host Hungary at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday in Group F. Roberto Martinez’s men have been flawless so far, collecting maximum points from their opening three qualifiers, while Marco Rossi’s Hungary are fighting to keep their slim hopes of topping the group alive after an inconsistent start to the campaign.

The Selecao extended their perfect run with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland on Saturday. Despite Cristiano Ronaldo missing from the penalty spot, Portugal found a late winner through Ruben Neves in stoppage time. That result not only maintained their 100% record but also showcased their resilience and ability to grind out results even when their attack is not firing at full tilt. Martinez’s side now have nine points from three matches and sit five points clear at the top. It means victory against Hungary, coupled with an Ireland result against Armenia, would seal early qualification.

Portugal vs Hungary Preview

Portugal’s form under Martinez has been impressive, with five wins and one draw in their last six matches across all competitions. They’ve scored freely in recent outings but Saturday’s narrow win ended their streak of scoring two or more goals in five straight fixtures. Still, with world-class quality across the pitch, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and the ever-dangerous Ronaldo, they remain overwhelming favorites at home.

For Hungary, the challenge is steep but not impossible. The Magyars secured their first win of the qualifying campaign last time out, defeating Armenia 2-0 thanks to goals from Daniel Lukacs and Zsombor Gruber. That victory lifted them to second place with four points from three games. With only three fixtures remaining, they can’t afford any slip-ups. A loss in Lisbon would officially end their chances of finishing first, pushing them into a battle for the playoff spot instead.

Rossi’s side have shown attacking promise, scoring twice in each of their last four outings, but their defensive record remains a concern. Before the Armenia win, Hungary had gone eight consecutive games without a clean sheet. They had conceded three in their home defeat to Portugal in September. That 3-2 defeat extended their winless run against Portugal to 15 matches.

Portugal vs Hungary Over/Under Predictions

Over 3.5 Goals @ +100 as per BetMGM

With both teams showing strong attacking intent in recent matches, Over 3.5 Goals appears to be a value play. Portugal have scored nine goals in their last three qualifiers, including a 3-2 win over Hungary in the reverse fixture, while the visitors have found the net in four consecutive games. Roberto Martinez’s men have plenty of firepower. Meanwhile, Hungary have shown they can trouble defenses, scoring twice in four straight outings. Given both sides’ offensive rhythm and defensive vulnerabilities, another high-scoring clash looks likely in Lisbon.

Portugal vs Hungary Player Picks

Rafael Leao to score anytime @ +140 as per BetMGM:

Rafael Leao anytime scorer looks the smarter play than Ronaldo at -200. Portugal are creating plenty of chances and the reverse meeting finished 3–2. Leao’s pace on the left wing and ability to beat the first man will come in handy against Hungary’s back line. With Portugal likely to dominate territory and chances, the price on Leao offers better value than Ronaldo, who also has great chance of scoring here.

Portugal vs Hungary Final Scoreline Prediction

Portugal will aim to make the most of their home advantage and seal qualification in style. On the other hand, Hungary will look to frustrate the hosts and capitalize on any complacency. However, with the quality, depth, and form Portugal possess, another home win appears highly likely.

Final Prediction: Portugal 3-1 Hungary
