The 2025 Stanley Cup Final is over with the Florida Panthers getting the better of the Edmonton Oilers for the second year running. But, even though hockey is on a break for now, action off the rink still continues, and the next big event is the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, which is set to take place on June 27 and 28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Among the many talented players in the pool this year, we will take a brief look at Porter Martone. Let us get a brief overview of the Canadian player, including his strengths, weaknesses, and draft projection.

Porter Martone Overview

Porter Martone is a junior ice hockey player who was born on October 26, 2006, in Peterborough, Ontario. The 18-year-old plays the forward position, primarily on the right wing. Standing at a height of 6 feet 3 inches and weighing approximately 207 pounds, Martone is one of the bigger players in the draft.

He has been part of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) since the 2022-23 season, where he played 29 games for the Sarnia Sting hockey team before joining the Mississauga Steelheads, which became the Brampton Steelheads last year.

In his three years in the OHL, Martone earned 204 points, including 89 goals from 178 games played. Martone has also represented Canada on the international stage at the under-17 and under-18 levels. The NHL Central Scout has ranked him at number 4 for North American skaters.

Porter Martone Strengths

Shooting is definitely one of Porter Martone’s strengths, evidenced by his 37 goals over the past year. He is much more efficient in the danger area than from the periphery. He has good technique and can generate quite a bit of power with his right-handed shot.

Having said that, his biggest strengths on the ice are his stick-handling and passing abilities. Martone displays great awareness and anticipation, but more importantly, it is his high hockey IQ that allows him to be a terrific playmaker. Last season, the Ontario native had 61 assists from 57 games.

Porter Martone Weaknesses

Martone is a decent skater, but where he lacks is acceleration and explosiveness. While Martone does have good shooting skills, his shots have, for the most part, been limited up close to the net. He hasn’t scored much on slap shots or one-timers, which is something he can look to improve.

Being one of the better, if not the best stick handler in this draft class, Martone is at times guilty of trying to do too much. Unfortunately, that has led to him losing the puck on more than a few occasions.

Martone is without a doubt right up there with the best of the best in this year’s draft class. A top forward, the 18-year-old has impressed scouts with his game and is expected to be a top ten draft pick for sure.

In fact, not many would be surprised if he is selected in the top 5 as well, as several draft projections have him at number 5 or higher. If that is the case, the Utah Mammoth (4), Nashville Predators (5), and the Philadelphia Flyers (6) are all in play for Martone.
