Phoenix Suns Trade Idea by NBA Insider Would Reunite Devin Booker with Former Teammate at Houston Rockets

NBA insider Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report recently shared a trade idea that would send Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets. With this trade, he would join his former teammate Kevin Durant, who was traded to the Rockets earlier this summer. This hypothetical trade would also see Phoenix get Fred VanVleet, Reed Sheppard, Steven Adams, Jeff Green, as well as a couple of first round picks in 2027 and 2029. In case this deal goes through, the Suns and Rockets would be swapping rosters from last season to next season.

Booker cannot be traded until January, and even if it is so, it is an unlikely situation that the Suns would move him. They have already made it clear that they don’t have any plans to trade him, and they want him for life. The record-breaking extension that they handed him this off season is a testament for it.

Hughes wrote, “Devin Booker can’t be traded until January, and it’d be admittedly weird if the Suns and Rockets transacted again so soon after the Kevin Durant deal. But there’s just no other logical destination for this pair of future first-rounders. That also helps overcome the reality that Booker has never shown a willingness to leave the Suns.”

He added, “The Suns need these picks back. Otherwise, the non-playoff seasons ahead won’t feature the typical payoff: high lottery position. The key to ensuring Phoenix’s fallow period lasts only a couple of seasons is regaining control of those 2027 and 2029 selections. Otherwise, the dark days could stretch well into the 2030s.”

Should the Suns Consider to Trade Devin Booker?

As stated, the Suns are not interested in trading Booker, and they want to keep him for his entire career. If that would be the case, the deal might enable them to reclaim their own future. This deal with the Rockets would allow them to hit the reset button and accomplish that goal. With the move, the Suns would regain their draft capital in 2027 and 2029, and allow them to rebuild.

That being said, the deal might not be worth it for the Suns. They are coming off a poor season, where they missed the playoffs, and would aim to finish the upcoming season in a better spot on the standings. However, their roster isn’t looking good with Booker, Green, Dillon Brooks, and if they decide to execute the deal, it would further harm their roster and do more damage.

Having made his NBA debut in 2015, the 28-year-old has been a part of the Suns ever since the beginning. While both the parties were involved in multiple failures, Booker has proven how committed he is with the Suns, and vice versa.
