Badosa meets red-hot Wang in Berlin quarters
Eighth seed Paula Badosa is set for a quarterfinal battle against qualifier Xinyu Wang at the Berlin Open. The Spaniard has looked sharp so far, easing past wild card Eva Lys and unseeded Emma Navarro in straight sets. Wang, meanwhile, has turned heads with a breakout run, first taking out Daria Kasatkina, then stunning second seed Coco Gauff, who was fresh off her French Open title earlier this month.
Wang’s giant-killing form has drawn comparisons to Lois Boisson’s fairytale run in Paris by some. While Berlin isn’t a Grand Slam, it’s still a prestigious WTA 500, and if Wang can keep her momentum going, another upset could be in the cards.

Badosa has flashed top form, most notably during her Australian Open semifinal run, which included a win over Coco Gauff but a loss to Aryna Sabalenka. She also reached the Roland Garros third round and Strasbourg quarters, winning 69.3% of first-serve points and firing 104 aces across 24 matches. But her season has also been hampered by recurring back issues, forcing withdrawals from Indian Wells, Madrid, and Rome, along with mid-match retirements in Merida and Miami.

Wang, meanwhile, has had an up-and-down year. Her best result came with a semifinal finish in Singapore, followed by a quarterfinal in Parma and a round of 16 in Strasbourg. In 19 matches, she’s won 66.1% of first-serve points, with modest return and break stats (38.4% and 38.5%).

Paula Badosa leads the head-to-head against Xinyu Wang 1-0, with their only clash coming earlier this year in Melbourne. The Spaniard took that encounter in straight sets, needing a second-set tiebreak to close it out. It was a composed performance that highlighted Badosa’s poise under pressure and her ability to raise her level in tight moments.
Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
---|---|---|---|---|
2025 | Australian Open | Round of 128 | Paula Badosa | 6-3, 7-6(5) |
Paula Badosa | Category | Xinyu Wang |
10 | Current Ranking | 49 |
376-208 | Career W-L | 239-170 |
15-9 | YTD W-L | 10-14 |
4 | Career Titles | 0 |
0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
0 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Even after battling injuries, Badosa has shown a higher ceiling and the ability to deliver under pressure. With a head-to-head edge and stronger performances at bigger events, she enters as the favorite and should edge past Wang if she holds up physically.
Prediction: Xinyu Wang in straight sets
