Eighth seed Paula Badosa opens her Berlin Open campaign against local wildcard Eva Lys. The winner will go on to face Emma Navarro, who has already booked her spot in the next round with a straight-sets win over Marta Kostyuk.

Paula Badosa vs. Eva Lys Preview

Badosa’s season has been heavily disrupted by recurring back injuries, forcing her to retire mid-match in both Merida (quarterfinals) and Miami (Round of 16) and withdraw from Indian Wells, Madrid, and Rome. Still, when fit, she’s shown flashes of her top-tier form, including a semifinal run at the Australian Open, where she upset Coco Gauff before falling to Aryna Sabalenka. She also reached the Strasbourg quarterfinals and the third round at Roland Garros. Across 24 matches, Badosa has hit 104 aces, won 69.3% of first-serve points, and converted 42.3% of her break point chances.

Lys, meanwhile, started her season with a career-best fourth-round finish at the Australian Open but hasn’t made it past the Round of 32 in any WTA main draw since. Her best result came at the WTA 125 in La Bisbal, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Panna Udvardy. Most recently, she exited in the second round at the French Open. In 16 matches so far, she’s hit just 13 aces, won 59.8% of first-serve points, and converted an impressive 49.6% of her break points.
