Patrick Mahomes is arguably the one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time. Meanwhile C.J. Stroud just finished playing his second season but is no slouch either. Both of these players have led their teams to playoffs. While one has three Super Bowls championships, two NFL MVPs, and three Super Bowl MVPs, the other won the Offensive Rookie of the year in 2023 and was ranked eighth in NFL MVP voting just in his rookie season.
With each of these quarterback’s greatness, today we look at who has the advantage in head-to-head matchups.

Mahomes was not the starting quarterback for the Chiefs when he was drafted to the league. He played as a backup to Alex Smith in 2017. Whereas Stroud was the starting quarterback for the Texans, playing in 15 games. Stroud had arguably the best rookie season of all time and led the Texans to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Mahomes did not get much playing time in his rookie season, starting in just one game throughout 2017. However, in his sophomore season, Alex Smith was traded from the Chiefs which made Mahomes the primary quarterback for Kansas. In 2018, Mahomes statistically had one of the best seasons ever and immediately emerged into a superstar, winning his first NFL MVP award. He became only the second player in NFL history with 5000 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Let us compare Mahomes vs Stroud 2024-2025 season stats:
| 2024-2025 Stats | Patrick Mahomes | C.J. Stroud |
| Passing Yard | 3928 | 3727 |
| Interceptions Thrown | 11 | 12 |
| Passing Touchdowns | 26 | 20 |
| Passer Rating | 93.5 | 87.0 |
| Rushing Attempts | 58 | 52 |
| Rushing Yards Gained | 307 | 233 |
| Times Sacked | 36 | 52 |
| Rushing Touchdowns | 2 | 0 |
In the 2023-2024 season, it was close but Mahomes still is the better quarterback statistically. Stroud has only played in two seasons so far and has a long way to go. However, he has led the Texans to back-to-back playoff appearances and the future looks extremely bright.

Mahomes and Stroud have never played against each other in the playoffs. Stroud will face the reigning champs for the first time in his career on January 19th, 2025 for the divisional round of the 2024 NFL playoffs.
Mahomes and Stroud have only met once in the regular season. They played against each other, for the first time, on December 12th, 2024. Mahomes and the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans with the final score being 19-27. Here is a detailed view of their respective stats after the game;
| Their First matchup | Patrick Mahomes | C.J. Stroud |
| Passing Yard | 260 | 244 |
| Passing Touchdowns | 1 | 2 |
| Interceptions Thrown | 0 | 2 |
| Passer Rating | 93.5 | 73.0 |
| Rushing Attempts | 5 | 2 |
| Rushing Yards gained | 33 | 23 |
| Times Sacked | 1 | 2 |
| Rushing Touchdowns | 1 | 0 |
In their first matchup, it is quite clear than Patrick Mahomes outperformed C.J. Stroud in almost every statistical category. Stroud held his own going against Mahomes but he came up short.
Mahomes is still considered to be the best quarterback in the NFL currently. It will be a difficult challenge for Stroud and the Texans to defeat the Chiefs and the odds are heavily stacked against Houston. However, Stroud and Mahomes are two of the best players NFL has to offer and it will certainly be entertaining to watch them go at it.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
